Yes, thank god for everything else you're exposing yourself to by using a decade old operating system without UAC.

Yep - I was very impressed to see the update installer ask if I want to keep add-ons installed by a third party, with the default option being no.

It's pretty stupid, but the only problem I have with using something like Arch on my desktop is I can never seem to get the fonts to look nice (ie. like they do in OS X or Ubuntu) when I've installed/configured Xorg myself.

I wonder if someone guessed the password to the throwaway account. I bet it (was) either the same as the username or something like "password".

You get downvoted when your comments are low quality and/or don't add to the discussion. Every comment you write with "why did you downvote me???" is both low quality and doesn't add to the discussion. Relax, it's only HN. Go build somethin

I think you're getting the marketing of Apple products mixed up with why OS X is part of this "trend". OS X is popular among hackers because it's both a Unix-like and polished/supported enough to use as a "serious" workstation (not that Lin

General rule of thumb: If you find yourself editing your post asking people not to downvote, it's time to delete it.

Understood, but I'm not ready to give up on this just yet :-) I know you think this is a futile effort, but I'd welcome any improvements from someone who knows more about the engine internals than I do. I'm currently working out what I can

Hmm, I understand where you're coming from, but I'd argue that many applications embedding Javascript engines - particularly libraries trying to provide JS bindings - won't need anything more complicated than simple script/function/value ma

True, but this is more of a convenience wrapper than a standard. It can happily wrap existing contexts, so it means that eg. one set of function bindings can be used with both V8 and TraceMonkey (even without the embedding application usi

Yep, this server is stuck on CentOS 5.5, which is apparently the latest the host offers. I'm glad the new version uses a current kernel - I (naively) assumed that as the server was set up recently, the version of CentOS installed would be t

I noticed the age of the stock CentOS kernel the other day when trying to build something that used timer FDs - 2.6.18 was released in 2006 .

I don't know if it's just a fad - what more is a blog backend with a cache plugin doing than generating static HTML? It's more like the universally accepted "right way of doing things" being taken a step further. Why should the system that

I particularly like the C99 features mentioned there. I wonder if I can somehow have GCC enable them for use with C++?

I'm not trolling here, this is a genuine question: What are the advantages of using SVN over Git? (assuming one was starting a new project and hadn't yet chosen a VCS)

TCP_NOPUSH is broken, too - if you enable it and then later disable it with setsockopt, it doesn't immediately send any pending data (as it does on FreeBSD, and as TCP_CORK does on Linux). IIRC, a lot of their code came from FreeBSD back in

What's the latency like with USB display adapters? I've been running a triple-head setup for years, which is one of the reasons I've never been able to use my MBP as my primary machine.

You can't apply a patch if you're using it as a shared library, and OpenSSL is only part of the problem - what about SChannel on Windows? That can never get NPN support, until perhaps Windows 8. I know NPN is the right thing to do long-te
