I bought a desk-sized Lack table from Ikea, and took it to Home Depot to saw the legs down, so that it added around 12" to my standard desk. Now I can stand while working. Assuming you have an external monitor / keyboard / mouse, the only

It has always bothered me that Baye's theorem is a named result, instead of just "the law of conditional probability," say. As soon as you formally define conditional probability, it is obvious. To be fair, though, I think he discovered it

The obvious negative this has on folks outside of research-level academia is a significant contribution to tuition prices, which seem to be rising at about 5% per year. But a less obvious - and personally very painful - consequence of greed

I like the installation options on a mac: you have the official app store, but you don't have to use it. In theory, Android could also offer different marketplaces, one where the apps are carefully reviewed, and another where anything goes.

This is a great solution because it can settle things quickly with less stress and let everyone get back to work. Gamers are _not_ going to confuse Notch's and Bethesda's use of the word "scrolls," so I don't see why either company should t

It would be cool if there were custom support for linking accounts, such as with facebook. That code is never fun to write, but common.

About the questionable evidence images: The actual Samsung aspect ratio (of the full device) is about 1.46, while the photo makes it look closer to 1.36. The iPad's image is more accurate at around 1.3. The vertical lines in the image (cl

I think the time for indie iOS developers as real contenders has passed. Yes, indie developers can still make great apps, but it's no longer realistic to compete with the production quality that is often seen in the top 10, or even top 50

[[TL;DR for this comment - Publishers are taking advantage of a prisoner's dilemma / competitive closed market to monetize the near-zero value they supply.]] Professors don't get much money from direct publication -- in fact, many conferenc

Why are creative Lego sets a minority? I think you can draw an analogy with wikipedia. Most people just read, and don't contribute. But what makes wikipedia what it is, is the ability of others to put their ideas into it. So we have the

A deep problem seems to be a high barrier-to-entry for would-be competing carriers. If it was easy to start a business that charged rates people were happier with, someone would do it, and make a good deal of money. As things currently ar

This reminds me of the famous Knuth quote: "We should forget about small efficiencies, say about 97% of the time: premature optimization is the root of all evil." In this case, I'd say the premature optimization was simply trying to prove t

By my calculation, there have been about 130 million Android devices sold to date, and over 200 million iOS devices (including iPads and iPod touches). I haven't found an easy way to get these numbers. Here are my sources: * Apple announc

Shannon's paper would be a good example of a great math paper that introduced deep, original ideas -- many of the higher-rated papers are good, but not original work. I love reading the works of original authors. For example, there's a Dov

Things I found interesting: * typedefs are discouraged in many cases * goto is acceptable for common-function-exit code * 8 tab-based spaces per indent I agree with the first two. Careful goto use can be like a destructor for a function.
