Always wanted to ask an academic about this. Compilers take input source and libraries and maybe some configuration parameters (in C you can pass preprocessor definitions, etc) and produce an output. No network calls, no conditional file IO

I remember my gentoo days where I had to debug stuff from the console. Browsing stackoverflow and forums with lynx is possible and saves you in situations when your graphics card drivers fail for some reason.

If you reach Facebook scale and optimize a flow by 10%, you can basically save thousands of dollars per month making optimizations valuable for the company again. This is one of the aspects where optimizations starts making sense again.

You might want generate assembly yourself, even if it is in the most inefficient way. I found myself that LLVM has a very high barrier to use.

I love the fact that they have their own native implementations of clients for mysql, postgres and mongo. In the Java world people just use jdbc and wrap it with a threadpool and expose it as "async", but in rust it is truly async

basically there are already a lot of interchangeable backends, they are going to introduce a new one written in rust, which should increase memory security, but rust itself does not cleanup itself when it panics
