Screencasts take a lot of time to watch and, most importantly, they aren't google-searchable. Tags aren't enough. In general, video sucks as a medium for surprising number of applications. I rarely bother with it - when I stumble across on

I work at a engineering company even bigger than IBM, and what we have here is crazy: There is a corporate Windows network and all computers come pre-damaged with a special "Corporate Image" that we are all obligated to run: it's Windows XP

There have been a few projects here on news.yc that follow the same pattern (in my opinion). And please take it as a constructive and healthy criticism. I cannot really coin a proper name for this pattern, but I may call it "how is it bette

C++ feels like a Japanese sportbike for small projects: your code will run crazy fast and it's easy to kill yourself if you're not good enough at it. When your project grows beyond a certain size, C++ starts to feel like early soviet ballis

By "most of the country" I mostly meant two coasts: Seattle, Oregon (Portland), California, Boston/NY/DC. Plus some other technology hubs: central Texas (Austin) and Chicago. That is not a small list of cities, certainly deserves to be call

On the bottom floor? You must be kidding me. Average salaries of CS graduate after 3-4 years out of school are in six-figure range in most parts of the country. That's in top 5% of US population and you can hardly call that a "bottom floor"

The best submission today by far, IMO. I suspect it won't get crazy popular around here, unfortunately. Creating a sustainable business has been my lifetime dream, and hearing day after day after day about quick "exit strategies" on news.yc

Yea... think of anybody trying to create a new web-enabled hardware. In addition of getting a browser working right, they would be at Adobe's mercy for providing a flash plug in for it. Now imagine if Silverlight becomes hot together with J

A service like this should really be integrated into every desktop "shell" and configurable for various storage back-ends like FTP, WebDAV or Subversion. Every desktop I work at has a link to an FTP folder on my site where I keep various sh

I've said it before and I'll do it again: a successful blog is a project on it's own with exactly the same kind of problems: attracting users, being relevant, being original, etc. You're offering him to double his working hours only to have

Linux can't compete with Textmate? You must be kidding me. I could make fun of Textmate and 37 signals who popularized it, but I really don't want to start flamewars. Come on... Unix is the king when it comes to text editors for programmers

Nobody argues the infrastructure part, he's saying that Google's Engine simply does not make much sense. Thing is, for 99.9% of all web applications do not have such crazy scalability requirements and open virtualized environments like Engi

Podcasting is failing because 99% of the population doesn't even know WTF "podcasting" is and won't even try to click "Podcasts" button or whatever. GMail would have failed miserably if they tried to replace "emailing" with "ajaxing". For t
