No I believe you're right on this (though I'm not a particularly heavy HN user). Upvoting things you agree with implies that you should downvote things you don't agree with and that really isn't appropriate.

I turned this on and a ton of my auto archived mail started showing up in my inbox. Seems cool though but I immediately turned it off.

I can definitely see this side of the complaints. The side I was arguing against was everyone's outrage that you couldn't just use Friday to moonlight.

I think it's funny a lot of comments are saying they would be angry about not being able to work on that Friday. I'm not particularly sure why you would be upset if your employer offered to pay you 40 hr/week salary and only expected you to

It's akin to firing and suing a carpenter because he used skills he developed on the job to build a nice rocking chair for the local community center. While I'm totally on your side of this argument, I think this example is particularly i

Usually it goes "it's not you, it's me...". Yes but in life as in dating, I'd like to know why I'm not a match. Knowing the posting was inaccurate for what you're looking for is better than wondering why one got turned down for what seeme

Given that there were only 210 total swear words, the accuracy of this seems pretty questionable. It's possible that one guy could be responsible for a large percentage of swearing for a given language.

This post seems inspired from a discussion DHH had on twitter with @obie (founder of hashrocket) yesterday about people in their positions moving on to new ventures or staying for the long term of what they helped start. Obie's position was

In prior experience (having now been on both sides of the table) it's not about what you (the job seeker) learn it's about what they (the employer) learn. Not that they can hope to get much information, just enough to filter your resume in

"Recovering your goods" in the sense of a website is to take it offline or restore the original contents. I think filling the page with stuff like this goes beyond recovery.

It's the "nice way" to go by replacing your stuff with the original design when you decide you're really not going to be getting paid. Can see just removing the page entirely, kind of. However, I don't think it's good for either side of the

I'd like to know what type of jobs the responders work. Would be interesting to see a breakdown of answers to "how demanding is programming" by users of different languages/frameworks or by what type of company they work at (startup, big co

I meant the model that OSS software gets developed in. That people work on the feature or project they love/want to see succeed/etc rather than what a manager told them to focus on.

I was at this talk (given at CodeMash a few days ago). It spurred a lot of discussion/opposition over the fact that it revolves so heavily around only hiring passionate, rock star quality developers that care about the product you're develo

I think the drama of a million "WTF?"'s are just people of the internet being, well, people of the internet. The TechCrunch post, discussions here, etc more accurately portray people being annoyed that this critical bug is getting ignored.

I'm not sure I get how this can be the case. The volume that some people listen to music in ear buds is pretty shocking. They contend that hearing loss might be cumulative and delayed, and therefore surface as the participants age. Better
