European was a generalization, maybe it's only Germany. I'm not sure.

That looks better, but it's still $150/month for a quad core with only 1GB of memory. In fact even their $270/month offering only has 1GB of ram. The specs vs. price is not close between the German and US offering.

I'm an engineer, but picked up enough design sense and CSS to be dangerous. After designing several sites I can confidently say I suck, but not more than 50% of the professional designers out there. Good design is hard. The problem is it's

Unless you have significant equity, you need to immediately negotiate higher pay or leave. * $500/week is ridiculous. You are way underpaid. * There is no upside for you: * Say the company is successful and starts generating a lot of

I've gone back and forth on this but generally come back to liking piston's approach - it's worked out to be smarter than everything I've hacked up myself. I have yet to try the unified approach where the html and api views are the same und

I definitely don't want to be the guy getting the 3AM call, but I don't see how going with a VPS saves me from that. Our approach is to have a semi-hot backup with semi-automated fail-over (hopefully fully automated in the future). Using a

Business continuity comes from having warm/hot backup servers in different colos, not from the speed at which we can replace servers. But your point is taken, it is certainly much easier to have a server replacement automatically happen tha

Control panel keeps coming up. I haven't used one, so maybe that's what I'm missing. You're right, single click OS install or backup would be compelling.

That's a fair list. I'd argue that you can get scale-up by augmenting your colo servers with on-demand VPS servers and still save money on the common case (we did this not too long ago when we got an unusual traffic spike). If the traffic i

I thought along the same lines, but our experience has been that beyond the initial server setup time we spend almost no time twiddling with servers. Hardware failures are extremely rare, and in case we have a significant one we'd just repl

Take a deep look at both Flickr and Twitter's APIs. Follow their model as much as you can. Use JSON and as consistent an interface as you can come up with. Think through how you'd rebuild your website using only your APIs. http://apiwiki.t

Definitely Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). It's a very effective martial art, and its technical nature makes it a very good fit for an analytical mind. I've only been at it for a few months but so far I love it. I haven't tried Judo, but I expec

Have you seen http://xpenser.com/ ? Lets you record expenses from email, SMS, Twitter, IM, iPhone, browser search box, voice (call and say it), etc. They also have a full set of APIs. Maybe you could build on top of their system.

This is the caricature of clearly-produced-by-an-academic. The idea that founders would use a spreadsheet with relative weights to divide up the pie is so counter to what actually happens it's comical. I do agree that dividing 100% by the n
