I think you're making my argument for me: if anyone has stats on the total number of adsense ads served vs adwords ads served, we can derive the value of adsense vs adwords ads. There are many more adsense ads displayed than adwords - it's

I hope he's not actually putting his retirement money on the line here. It's not about the quality of the ads, which he argues will get better with more data. It's about intent. When I search on Google, my natural next action is to click a

I started with an early version of Titanium, made a lot of progress very quickly, but ended up hitting many bugs and performance and memory issues. Each new version of Titanium made steady progress, but didn't really make for a crisp, respo

I haven't directly experimented with JQM in a WebView, but based on my experience with JQM on PhoneGap and Titanium in general I would not recommend that path. JQM is slow enough on its own, and Titanium has its own performance issues, so t

This is conflating so many unrelated things. Leaving work at 5:01 is great - leaving work whenever you need to is great. But spending your life working at "just a job" is a waste. If you're only doing your job to make money you're doing you

Putting aside the morality of this particular case, I'd point out that this type of copying will discourage early sharing of concepts / projects on HN, which is not a good thing.

Hackathons are the opposite of "how marketing people think software is made". They are the essence of the process of development with the decoration removed. Dave must not have been to a good hackathon. I've personally been involved in hack

The issue is that the Privacy Policy is (or certainly can be viewed as) a legal document. Therefore I'm strongly inclined to believe you're better off with a lawyer approved document. I'd love to have our privacy policy be "we will not do a

For a very early stage startup caring about privacy does not immediately translate to displaying a privacy policy. For us it was a day 1 decision: we will not do anything remotely creepy with your data. We will guard what you give us carefu

As a bit of background, Joe was founder of SimpleGeo, which raised $9.81M and was sold for $3.5M (according to TechCrunch). They were doing great stuff, but I kept wondering how they were going to generate enough value to justify a $10M rai

Are there any good guides on how to combat a DDOS? I'm curious how a team of good technical people without past experience in the area could react.

While it's fun to point out downtime of hosted services, you have to balance it against downtime you'd have had if you hosted the service yourself. I've found non-critical services I administer and host myself always suffer worse downtime t

Very interesting. I wonder if it allows interaction with existing Android libraries / capabilities (eg. for building UIs) or if it's separate. Also, would be great if there was a sample app to download and try so one can get a sense of what

I was rooting for HTML5 / jQuery mobile approach to work, but watching it develop (I know clemesha) it became clear that it wasn't going be a very good result. The native app, by comparison, is clearly significantly superior. I wish it wasn

It's important to note that the VC is not objecting to the founders taking cash off the table. He's objecting to the method (dividends as opposed to a secondary sale). His arguments are convincing to me - and I'm a founder so my bias is nat

The author misses the goal of A/B testing: it's to improve a measurable business objective (signups, retention, etc), not to pick a more aesthetic design. A/B testing may tell you to pick a "worse" design that results in better business. Th
