I'll probably always take the train into Boston. Even though it's a little more expensive than taking a greyhound or driving (if I can find parking), I don't like to drive in Boston. However, if I needed to go much further I&

Sorry for the trivial question: should I leave house numbers off the start/end points? i.e. this works: <road name>, <zip>, <town name> but this does not: <house number>, <road name>, <zip>, <town

I doubt I'll ever ride a bike to work in the winter. I say this because there's a backwoods road on my commute which I cannot avoid and which gets skinnier and skinnier as the storms add up. It reaches a point where two lanes beco

If I remember correctly, you have to go through the IRS freefile page (here: https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/ ) to get to the "real" free version of turbotax. The link to the "free edition" on

I really like the explanation of the png file format. I'm not sure I'll ever use this knowledge, but I was happy to learn it.

If the language uses curly braces to define blocks, it's easier: ciB. Parentheses are easy as well: cib. Otherwise, I'm not sure there's a good solution currently. You can substitute by indentation with a plugin ( https:/

I use the self-checkouts pretty much every time I go to walmart. I frequently do not put items on the scale after scanning them, either because they're too large to bag or because I've run out of room. I assumed the scale wasn

I don't know enough about Linux to offer a complete answer, but I can offer the distribution I use as a suggestion. I've been using Solus (getsol.us/) for a few years and I think it comes close to what you're asking fo

I'm aware of three notebook programs: Jupyter, Iodide, and Observable. Jupyter reigns supreme, at least in my opinion, because there is a kernel available for almost every language. Jupytext lets you strip out the input cells into a ve

Woah. That's a lot of books. Between the math, physics, and cs sections, years from now you'd look back and wonder if you really should have downloaded all of them.

One of the funniest things I've read on HN is Gluten Free Antarctica ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18729224 ), which didn't have much to do with tech. I was glad to have come across it.

Epic is kind of a thorn in the side for me when gaming (on a Linux distribution). There are a few Epic exclusive games that I'd like to play (Arise: a simple story, Journey, etc.), but they don't even have entries in protondb. Tha

If you go to protondb.com and search for the game, there's a link under the title for "GitHub Issue Search". I suspect that's where you'll find the discussions. Here's the issue for MCC. https://gith

I do the same thing, but with Alt-D. I thought it was strange that there are duplicate hotkeys for the function, but looking at the shortcuts page shows that's not uncommon. It seems F6 does the same thing, but I can't remember th

As long as you don't skip a numeric key, you can rely on the length operator for "array-like" tables. There's no built-in way to check the length of a "dictionary-like" table, but you can overload the length op

That's a really common misconception. If there is a "hole" in the table, the result from the length operator is undefined. It doesn't always stop at the first instance of nil. Tracking the table length manually and stash
