ANY statistic other than race can be gamed by rich families. It seems like it would at least be harder for a rich teenager to game a standardized test, as no matter what study is required. Compare this to political activism, prestigious int

In addition to what huslage said, there’s something called an aerodynamic stall: in very oversimplified terms, if you go up too steeply without adequate thrust your wings will produce dramatically less lift all at once.

My own airline had an incident recently where one of our senior captains became so disoriented taking off at night over water that he thought every flight instrument onboard had become unreliable (VERY unlikely). He dove toward the ground b

“Balls to the wall” is an aviation idiom, similar to “maximum thrust”. It refers to the ball on the end of a throttle being pushed to the firewall when wide open. I don’t know if it’s the only error made by the HR rep that through this toge

Why be skeptical? The commenter has nothing to gain and just shared some cool facts about a fun but unimportant (to most of us) article. There’s not much motive to lie and even if there was, it’s harmless.

I don’t have any, other than maybe look in general chat to make sure it’s active. I’ve also struggled with this, often a promising new server is disappointing after I get to know it over a couple days.

While I don’t personally know any good servers for those topics, https://disboard.org is a good resource for finding new servers that match your interests. Good luck!

Jolly Old Soul is fantastic, thanks for the reminder to turn it on! This is odd, but the only people I ever meet who listen to Soma FM are in tech. I remember finding it as a teenager, it was a default bookmark in the pre-installed browser

I think you’re correct! There’s a fantastic book called Skunkworks by Ben Rich that covers the development of the F-117. Part of the reason it came out so “blocky” looking was due to computer design limitations of the time.

My anecdote to counter yours: I moved from the PNW to Rhode Island for four years, and then to Ohio. Moving to the Northeast was absolutely a culture shock for both of us, with “colder” and less helpful people in general. Over time, we disc

TSA-Compliant models like the Leatherman Style PS might be what you’re looking for. My dad got me a nice leatherman when I went to college and it was incredibly useful for years, such a great gift idea.

My previous post was lighthearted, but I have had problems with voice-to-text in noisy cars. I suppose there’s a chance this issue be carried over to the receiver’s voice-to-text software.

I disagree! With ubiquitous voicemail voice-to-text functionality, I find it fast and useful, plus it can be sent using a hands-free device in a car. I would argue that you’re a zoomer curmudgeon rather than an old one. :)

Sections of the Mullan Road still exist in the US West. It is/was one of the first wagon roads to cross the Rockies. Somewhat old for the New World, anyway. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mullan_Road

In most or all modern airliners, the autopilot can be re-engaged after an engine failure. Certainly still stressful, but they don’t need to hand-fly it.

I’m an airline pilot that operates heavily in the Northeast US (lots of fog). It’s much less than 1% of landing where minimums below a standard ILS are necessary. I would guess I have to use a CAT II/III ILS approach maybe once a year.
