I recently tried to launch a site for friends and family that allowed people to make confidence predictions on various outcomes so they could track their calibration over time. It was like "I'm 84% certain Kansas City will beat Bu

Happens to songwriters too, sometimes it goes somewhere. I had a dream once, on the morning of a July 4th, that for some reason took a really common cliche jazz/blues riff and slowed it way down while I was dreaming of a bunch of Ameri

I think as it becomes more common for executives to think we can replace software engineering with agents, I wonder if they might be basing their decisions off of unrealistic perceptions of the average software engineer. I guess I'm mu

I'm working on https://concludia.org , a site that helps groups of people collaborate on arguments and conclusions. I don't really have any revenue plans for it currently as I suspect it will be rather niche -- I certai

It feels like an appreciation for hypotheticals or givens is missing here. One can simultaneously be against the war and the bombing in general, and also accept it as a given and then think about a certain situation being understandable wit

Really fascinating article. Bits of bias here and there, like "The US military has been trying to close the gap between seeing something and destroying it for as long as that gap has existed" -- you can respond to seeing and under

The article says it's from first principles and looks pretty deep, and I didn't have the time to exhaustively read it myself, so I used my side project concludia to try and analyze and graph the argument... you can see the argumen

Isn't most of the positive impact not going to be "new projects" but the relative strength of the ideas that make it into the codebase? Which is almost impossible to measure. You know, the bigger ideas that were put off befor

Not even close, not when all things are considered. $50/hour is 100k/year, which is still considered a decent salary. 24k/year in 2000-2002 was definitely not considered a decent salary. $12/hour for sw engineers was evi

In Portland, there was a time in 2000-2002 where Nike and Intel had contract offers out to SW developers for $12/hour, and were getting slammed with applications.

That's not on my radar right now. I'm not explicitly rejecting the path, but I'm more intent on figuring out ways to make it easier for people to collaborate on arguments together, which means one destination for now.

While each of these are good to keep in mind while reading, I don't find them very exhaustive or derivable. I prefer the Theory of Constraints (Eli Goldratt)'s "Thinking Tools", specifically the "categories of legit

Yeah... so far, I have found that trying to fully justify a political conclusion has a way of moderating the conclusion. But it's still possible to arrive at very different well-reasoned conclusions just from different axiomatic person

Coincidentally, I've been toying with using concludia to make the argument behind a tech design for an upcoming project... when one of our teams is enamored with graph database for it - probably neptune in our case. So far I'm hav

Yes - currently, each argument/graph is independent, but I've designed it in a way that should be compatible with future plans to "transclude" parts of other public graphs. Like if some lemma is really valuable to your o

Frustration at that kind of debate has been a large part of the motivation, how it occludes so much of what ideally should be a dialectic. I especially dislike how if someone gets flustered, they're seen as losing.

I love rebase locally, especially when I have a few non-urgent branches that sit around for a little while. I hate rebase after pushing. The rule of thumb that has worked for me is "don't rewrite someone else's history".
