What? Who's doing ActiveX or XUL for websites? Flash is already the most prevalent way to do a "media rich" website; it has nowhere to go but down from here. It's also proprietary and a nightmare to work with, and the runtime sucks for too

Seems more like a "could" than a "to" if an editor wants to change the headline.

C isn't hard, don't worry! It's actually a fairly simple language. But it's medium/low-level and there is a lot of power within its simplicity. Fast to learn, but a long time to master, as one might say. I don't know what people are using t

If I encountered code like this on the job, I'd feel obligated to let someone higher up know about it. I know this isn't a very constructive comment, but I don't really have much else to say :)

Yes, it does. We don't need some GUID standard for stuff like this, as advocated by the article. Your example is fine.

If you learn better that way, sure, feel free to do what works best for you. I don't see how this applies to the article, which advocates inserting code with a GUID in a comment so that you can find it again later and copy/paste a new versi

The performance of this plugin destroys Flash in every way. It also does vsync (wow yay we're past 1998 now, unlike Flash) and you can put the scripts right in the page. Adobe's inability to make Flash not blow is stunning – they have an in

You should copy and paste code so rarely that this shouldn't be a problem. The author of the article proves this point effectively with his snippet example; the correct way to fade out a window in Cocoa is with an NSAnimation and the NSView

I read the article, watched some of the presentation, and I still don't know what this is supposed to be. I don't think they do, either.

I have a 6-char Gmail account that's also an English dictionary word, which was made the day Gmail launched as invite-only. It gets a TON of spam, but I never notice it. The spam filter is well-trained. If you don't use any of the mailing l

Welcome to software and the internet. Distribution is far easier, but so is copyright infringement. If you've released your own software, 10:1 shouldn't be surprising. Stuff like audio software is even worse, where the ratio spirals complet

Not exactly a great article. Random analyst quoted by newspaper pulls some number out of thin air. How does he know how well YouTube is performing? In fact, can you even quantify how well YouTube is performing? It's like a part of our cul

Especially here in the Bay Area, Craiglist is huge. If I'm looking for something used, I always hit it up first before eBay. I find I'm way less likely to get scammed if I can meet the dude in person when I'm buying or selling something fir

Honestly, it looks like it's a very small amount of work required on the part of VCs – and only the larger ones, at that. But it's still stupid. I know we're not exactly an unbiased bunch when it comes to VC firms here on HN, but you don't

I don't know. Debuggers, used correctly, are powerful tools. I don't require debuggers to write code, but I don't think I would be making the best use of my time if I simply stopped using them, or even avoided using them if possible, as the

I don't know, I disagree with a couple of these points. Here is the basic recipe for a Pixar film. The main character has to "grow" throughout the film while facing what are essentially adult problems - using animation as the vehicle for s

Thanks for that link, it was fantastic. It remained mostly non-technical and yet was still a great nerd read. I always thought Carmack wrote fun stuff (and not just in code.)

I don't think the author fully understood the purpose of most of the tools he was dabbling with – he spent a lot more time making jokes about the differences between imaginary age groups than what the tools enable you to do. He talked about

Seems like somewhere between Trac and Github. I'd like to see it integrate with TicGit; that would rule. Trac's tickets are nice but having tickets integrate with the repo itself and being able to mess with tickets when offline or unable to
