What drove you to writing backend code in JavaScript? Having written several projects (client-side, but minimal DOM junk) in JS, I cringe at the thought of having to use it where it's not required. Some people really seem to like their JS,

Tail recursion optimization, not all calls. So no continuations, etc. And it's probably slow as hell. And I'll knife you if I see you using Python like this.

Yes, that's right, to a degree. The amount of software patent litigation that exists now is absurd. The reason H.264 is more secure for Apple and Google is that the technology is already covered by an existing patent, which is licensed out

My understanding is that Apple and Google cannot use Theora because they are targets for patent trolls, and would be sued by a multitude of companies claiming to hold patents that cover Theora. correction: It's just Apple/Safari that does n

Right. This is how Chromium works. Chromium does not build with H.264 compatibility out of the box. Projects using Chromium (not the Chrome package Google defaults for end-users) must explicitly enable H.264.

Mozilla is not a small business. Businesses play games with each other because they are competing in an open market. End users do not have to do this. I don't work at Mozilla, I do not know what their situation is, but saying 'no way' to th

Well, what if I decide to make a toy web application that works with video and I decide to use HTML5 video standard? Nobody is going to come after you. You're not even worth their time. Is it stupid that technically this may be interprete

This is for a broadcast license, from an article in 2002, for an older technology (straight MPEG-4, not the newer superset H.264 which is now widely embraced.) I don't know whether or not this proposed broadcast license fee was ever even en

I would not call Mozilla's Firefox a hobby project. The hobby projects which use H.264 have not been prosecuted, as far as I know, though I feel it's wrong for this possibility to exist.

H.264 is not proprietary. It's a standard, created through the coordination and cooperation of a large number of groups. Unlike much software that is 'protected' under patents, the development of MPEGn, H.264, etc. was a significant investm

He's not bashing on Clojure, he just states that it does not introduce many new concepts. And I would agree. Clojure does not really introduce anything new -- it bundles a bunch of existing stuff together into a more readily usable, cohesiv

I have a Nexus One. There's no reason to even bother with subpixel font rendering -- the DPI is so high that the text, with regular anti-aliasing, looks far sharper than ClearType on a normal density screen. I imagine Droid owners have the

A webshop selling airline tickets won't rank better if you add "interesting content", thats just not the way it works. What? Yes it will. More recent links from people will give it more page rank score. If it's a new algorithm that helps

S3 is not really a file system. It's more like a key/value store for arbitrary data. If you wanted a filesystem-like interface, you'd need something in front of it.

It looks like doing a foldr with key pairs and then a foldl violates that patent. In parallel Haskell, it can run on multiple processors, with the assistance of the RTS ('master process'). It's bullshit.

Cool. And for some more heavyweight Scheme->JS (stuff that you wouldn't mind using on a real project) check out inria's HOP (Scheme2JS is a component of it) and BiwaScheme. http://hop.inria.fr/ http://www.biwascheme.org/
