Points 1 and 2 are sort of fascinating to me. As far as I'm aware, patents and copyrights are defined in the constitution as monopolies granted to "Authors and Inventors". Do you know how it is that the laws, which are supposed to build o

Every desktop environment that I'm familiar with (OSX, KDE, Gnome) has a built-in password manager to hook into, that stores the data encrypted and prompts the user for a master password in some configurable way. I'm guessing that if the O

/dev/random is random bytes, so in order to make it typable, it's useful to convert it into characters. md5 is good for that. Alternatively, strings /dev/random|head gives some stuff that you can concatenate into a password.

Can you re-invest it in the non-profit that you created? i.e., accept the 5% and then just give most of it right back?

OMAP isn't a DSP, it's a dual-core with an ARM on one side and a DSP on the other. I don't know of any port of Linux to an actual DSP.

Yeah, the bit about name-brand drugs being only for those who an afford them out of pocket is especially bad. Drug patents are 20 years, so the peasants would be getting 20-year-old cancer treatments, while the select few would be getting

The big one is that there's a pretty good chance FBSD will run on your hardware, and there's a really slim chance that OpenSolaris will. Solaris just doesn't have the driver selection that BSDs or Linux have.

It's sort of interesting how unicode solved your problem, but totally ignored the exact same problem in east asia. It's still not possible to have a single unicode text file with japanese and chinese kanji in it. The official unicode answ

Would it be a cartel, or a voluntary tax? It sounds like it could evolve from a fine for illegal behaviour into a legal subscription program. The lawyers would be sad, but overall it might not be a bad deal.

A bit off-topic, but I've been seeing more infoq lately, and I'm wondering if there's a pwnyoutube/deturl type thing for infoq. I found the conclusion to Rich's talk on youtube, but it looked like it was filmed with a cell phone and it was

This whole line of reasoning reminds me of the Java3D API. Java, of course, takes the approach that only the designers of the langauge were smart enough to know when to abuse operator overloading (e.g. with strings), so for the Java3D math

I'd say it's mostly about your audience. Most people have flash installed and don't even know when they hit a flash page. For them, it's probably not a problem. If you want people to be able to view your app with a phone or from a non-MS

And in 1995, I could write interactive (quasi) graphical games on my TI-81. Without rebooting. At the time, a TI-81 was pretty fancy, but I've seen plenty that leads me to believe that nearly every kid today has a TI-83 for their math cla

Is the iTunes tv stuff still DRM'd, or have the shows gone the way of their music? I grabbed an episode of Drawn Together around 2006 (I think), and sort of drove me away from the entire iTunes tv stuff. The quality was terrible, the reso

I've been running KDE4 out of svn since pre-4.2, and it's really shaping up nicely. I actually finally built 4.3.2 out of Gentoo's package system last night, so I guess the 4.3.3 announcement was inevitable. Anyhow, not sure if anybody's s

Perhaps it's not too popular, but VHDL or Verilog are a ton more useful for learning about how a machine works. Seriously, writing some x86 assembly teaches you a thing or two, but implementing a full CPU from the design of the ISA to putt

If I could pay a reasonable amount for perpetual access to commercial-free content, I'd be happy with that. As it stands, I tend to buy the shows I want once they're on DVD, which works out to ~$2 per show. I wouldn't object to paying a b

That sounds a lot more like master-slave database replication than actual backups. The key difference being that you can roll back to your backups; when the slave replicates the invalid data of the master, you're hosed.

I can't reply to tc's reply to me (I think that "feature" should probably be disabled, btw; it tends to lead to broken threads like this one, and inhibits discussion), so I'm replying to myself, like a monster. Service provider competition
