I have a Roku Netflix Player, which is a $100 device with no moving parts; plug in power, HDMI, and put it on your wifi network, and away you go. The netflix selection is rapidly growing (they just got the Starz network, which really helpe

This brings up something that's been bothering me for a while: how does MS's dividend make anybody want to buy their stock? IIRC, MS pays a $0.11 dividend per $22 share (price as of this morning). I'm not very familiar with things relati

At the risk of sounding totally clueless, how do you find local hubs like that? I live in the twin cities in MN, and all that I know of is the ruby.mn ruby group, which is pretty talkative on the ruby list. Is there some online startup co

How does posting the source to vote counting software help anything? The real issue isn't that people want some source that's capable of counting votes accurately. The problem is that the machines aren't necessarily counting all the votes

I agree. I wouldn't consider Twitter or Facebook or craigslist innovative. They are really simple technologies (ignoring the software scaling challenges) that have been marketed extremely effectively. I don't understand why you don't thi

I think the best intro is http://www.pragprog.com/titles/jaerlang/programming-erlang , which comes in PDF form but also costs $22.00. As far as free resources, there's http://erlang.org/doc/getting_started/part_frame.html , which isn't

Just a few clarifications (upon reading, it doesn't look like hn supports html markup; I'm leaving the tags so that quotes are at least visible...): <i>Messaging: Sending a message is fast. But remember you are doing a copy of the d

macports gives OSX a decent enough package management system; port install ocaml, port install erlang, what more could you ask for? I guess using system libraries would be a bonus, but it's really quite usable as-is.

Your link for the lcd touchscreen is truncated with elipses. That is, the actual href="" part is truncated. Is this a feature of the hn software, or did the link get pasted in wrong?

And yet, this is exactly what I've been looking for for the past year or so. Not every computer needs to be a content creation device; I want a computer for my kitchen that's used for retrieving recipes. I can make the software to store a

Well, it looks like the 8300 still have that lovely ball that is the center of the phone's UI, and that totally stops functioning when it gets the smallest speck of dust on it. Is the ball of the 8300 removable, or is it like the 8100, whe

I have a blackberry pearl with t-mobile, and it's not bad. The data rate is slow (200k if you're lucky, usually much lower than that), but it lets you use the DUN bluetooth profile when connected with OSX, so it's an acceptable wireless mo

Set the environmental variable LC_CTYPE to something like "en_US.utf-8" for utf-8 output. I don't know where it's documented; I just found it on some guy's blog a while ago. This also apparently doesn't work if python's stdin isn't a cons

If you look at apache POI, they have libraries for handling doc, ppt, xls, etc. There's also a poi-like toolkit for handling the new docx, pptx, etc file formats somewhere, but I forgot where. They're java libraries, but it's pretty easy
