Don't think of switching to part-time as giving up, its a viable strategy. One, in brings money in the door. Two, it gives you time to step back and get your mind working on other things. Both of those are invaluable. Also, if you can suppo

However, if you relay on the IRS' advice and they turn out to be wrong, you still get hit with a tax bill. "Trust us, but don't trust us." Gotta love government.

Nothing free, as far as I know. Just an excel spreadsheet, some research, and a well-organized email inbox.

I agree, I don't think your churn rate is so bad that you need to offer any more levels. I would put all your work into acquiring new subscribers first. Every business is going to have churn, but the only way to grow is with new customers.

Try switching a quarter of your subscribers to it and see what the reaction is. If its not bad, move all of them over.

Just go at it and see how well it works out. You can always send out one email a day to a news outlet or blogger and tweak it as you go along. As an example, it could be this: "Dear Blogger, Are your readers still looking for that unique Va

What kind of marketing are you doing to increase subscribers? Do you send out press releases to bloggers, magazines and news sites?

Do you have any more options to reduce shipping costs? If its your largest expense, you can do more profit with less customers.

Does your app take people to the stories inside your app, or does it open a link in Safari? If everything happens inside your app, Apple probably views it as if you were claiming you owned those stories, or at least were not allowing the or

I'd say more than that. Two years maybe, unless you have parents to fall back on and basements to live in. Worrying about feeding yourself and ending up on the street and working on your start-up do not mix.

Is is possible to increase the time that you can comment on an old post? I found some of the posts in the "Ask HN" section were old, but not yet stale.

As an attorney, I can tell you that local bar associations are great for this sort of thing. I would also suggest small businesses that do what you do. They probably have attorneys who might know an attorney that's looking to have clients o

Here's how I see the problem and how I would solve it: I think you're trying to make money from the wrong people. I think you need to make money from the local businesses. See, the concierge isn't making any money off your app, at least not

I agree with this. The concierge is the guy who will be promoting your software and using it. If you show him how it will make his life easier, he will use it and get guests using it. You might want to approach them directly.

Who are the people paying you money? Not their names, but in general, where does your revenue come from? Maybe you're asking for money from the wrong people.

Right, but a testimonial still works as a marketing tool. Surely you have one user who loves your product and will say good things about it? Put that user up on your site and show people how useful your product can be to them.

I would second this. Also, have you thought about doing some case study testimonials? They're often an effective marketing technique to give people an idea on how your product will help them.

If you're looking to do this as a career, nothing beats an app you made yourself. I would give it much more weight in deciding whether to choose you as a developer than work you did for someone else. I don't know how much work you did on th

I've found it can do a lot, especially if your app is for a niche market like the OP's. When you go to a conference or a trade show, you're surrounded by people who will buy your App. It doesn't get any better than that when it comes to mar
