I recently released this compile testing library for Kotlin in the spirit of Google's [compile-testing]( https://github.com/google/compile-testing ). It can be used to test annotation processors, compiler plugins an

It took me 10 minutes to learn how to weld. If you only need it for DIY stuff then it's very easy to learn. But if you need to satisfy safety requirements or tolerances then it gets much harder. It's the same as in software: All t

It's hackernews... Many people here seem to totally lack any sort of reasonable scepsis when it comes to authorities.

If the tools they are making are used for the same purpose then obviously they are. We are not quite at that point yet, but it's not looking good.

This software is a tool that is very easy to abuse, in fact I would go so far to say that its primary purpose is to be abused. Like a gun it has its place in society, but that doesn't absolve you from responsibility when you sell guns

Yes and let me remind you that the German branch of IBM supplied the punch card computers and programs for identifying jews in census data in the third reich which enabled the holocaust. Palantir is doing exactly the same but with much more

Yeah sure, I've heard it all. Let me guess: What you conveniently forgot to mention is how you only use terminal applications with a minimal window manager, which makes a comparison to MacOS or Windows completely pointless since their

Your mistake was talking to an HR person. They are bureaucrats who understand nothing about our craft and only look for obvious reasons to disqualify you. Your goal is to say as little as possible and get past HR quickly to talk to an actua

As the company gets bigger this becomes less of an issue because there is communication overhead anyway. And don't forget the other side of the coin: As you increase the number of employees you decrease the risk of a bad hire and simil

Once again I ask: What do you mean with "works well". Just because some other ML method is better in practice doesn't mean that a NN can not achieve the same degree of approximation in theory.

What do you mean by "good approximation"? Arbitrarily close? Can you give an example of such a function? They very well may exist. But I think we can agree that non-differentiability of the target function is not sufficient. The f

That may not be what you meant but it is what you said. The "function you are trying to model" does not have to be differentiable as we have already established. Only the model itself (which is the neural network) needs to be diff

But scripting languages make it especially easy to do so. That doesn't mean people who use them are bad programmers. They just chose a bad tool.

Because in your imperative language monads can still be a useful abstraction. For example they can give you stuff like async-await or null-safe method chaining for free.

Python was a scripting language. All those problems are caused by people using it like something it isn't. Python has way outlived it's usefulness and it's about time we move on to something better.
