3 Mile Island was not a catastrophe, although it could have been. The reason for this is arguably the high standard of engineering. The safety systems worked to contain almost everything. Chernobyl was an outdated design when it was built,

Fiber optic wire has a very high voltage wire to power the amplifiers. (Interestingly, it's only one. The ocean water provides the return path.)

An excellent book for anyone interested in anything that has a frequency. The whole field is based on a simple but brilliant idea: using convolution and an impulse response to model anything linear. I encourage you to at least read the firs

Looks like it took a huge amount of engineering to build. The extensible conveyor belt going into the truck took some effort to design and build. The software wouldn't have been terribly difficult to implement, but is still impressive

To make coffee, you need water just below boiling. Commercial brewers are set at about 200 degrees. To make a proper pot of tea, you need boiling water.

Awesome. I've been dying to try A/UX for years. My only mac that could run A/UX died a few years ago. Getting ridiculously old computers and operating systems running is a fun hobby.

There are other ones which are just a simple amplifier, not a whole base station. There's one antennae on the outside, another smaller one on the inside, and whatever signal it picks up one one antennae, it retransmits on the other wit

Interesting. Presumably there will still be just piston rings in the normal place, although I would like to see more on how they are going to lubricate it. You don't want the gas spring chamber to fill up with oil. My guess for how the

Given that this site is dedicated to programmers, I'd expect you to realize that a new version of a program isn't a complete rewrite.

I love Linux. The year was 2005, I was 14. I had dialup, and I wanted to try out this Linux thing. I bought a 20 disc set of cds for Debian, and installed it on my computer. I had to install it several times before I figured out to press th
