They're both private so we'll probably never know though I doubt the sum was very large. Clearspring isn't doing so hot, I think we'll be seeing a lot of startups like it fizzle out. http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/01/06/clearspring-lays-of

Yes, the idea seems to be that they'll gather and monetize the data though I don't think that's sustainable. No one has to make money on this, they could fail while blowing all of their VC money. All of these widget companies seem like a

Is this some sort of ploy to get us to visit that site? It's simple: if you're not selling anything, whether it's goods, services, or ads, then you're not making money. Not all sites on the Internet exist for profit.

"Ask HN" threads are much more appropriate for book recommendations. Imagine if every book in the threads below were submitted- we'd have a bunch of noise and no real discussion. Submissions like this are only useful for people too unmotiva

It's quite annoying to see entire books submitted. It should be a requirement that you must be able to thoroughly discuss a submission. You can't discuss the entire contents of a lengthy text in a HN thread. It's like submitting a Google se

Enforcing specific types of usernames is rather lame. People would just enter fake names. Facebook depends on your real identity so people who have met you can locate you.

I think it may be related to acangiano's "Let's all grow up" post. He mentioned Hacker News and it seemed to be a popular submission, particularly on reddit. A few curious trolls probably wandered over and created new accounts. Of course, t

Seems like an expensive recipe catalog. I don't think it's a very good idea to use electronics while you're cooking. Getting grease on anything that can't be scrubbed under running water is very irritating. There's a more durable solution t

I think VGA is only there for prototyping purposes. This tablet probably doesn't have the power to output a very good resolution or decode high quality video for your LCD TV. You're better off getting a cheap computer and sticking MythTV on

Yes, the prototype clearly has USB, ethernet, and VGA. Realistically, though, why would anyone bother to plug a keyboard into this thing? Why wouldn't you just use your laptop or desktop?

That may be true for shared hosting, but not for VPS. The entire point of having a VPS is that you're guaranteed a slice of the server to do what you want. If your provider is somehow monitoring your processes, sniffing your traffic, and se

Where did you hear that? Amazon Web Services does not ban BitTorrent or IRC. They actually support BT as an official delivery method from S3. http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonS3/2006-03-01/index....

I don't think so. Amazon is protected by DMCA Safe Harbor provisions and doesn't have to act until they've received notice of copyright infringement on their servers. There are many legitimate uses for BitTorrent, I don't see Amazon putting
