Back when I dumped my Gmail account I wrote a little Python program using imaplib to download and save everything into a database. The script got lost with my last system upgrade since it was in a temporary directory of which I usually make

When my gmail was getting slower and slower I just dumped it and got myself a mailserver. It's overkill, yes, but it's a temporary solution (I've got some more in store for that box). In the meanwhile it's the fastest mailing experience I'v

The compiler optimizing out the loop completely is one of the reasons why I didn't turn on optimizations here, although there was a loop body. gcc is smart enough to optimize loops with a fixed outcome away in some cases. I probably should

It's interesting that he points out that testing for zero is cheaper than comparing two numbers. Interesting because this might not always be the case. For a quick test I used the conditions (i=0; i < NUMBER; i++) and (i=NUMBER;i != 0;

aircrack-ng assumes pre-shared keys. Cracking long passwords is quite time-consuming (read: takes a VERY long time). They actually explicitly state that in their wiki. I'm not exactly sure but I think I read something about using GPUs to ac

All the monitors were checking whether the file sharer used BT software? Why? I mean, there's not much of a reason to connect to a swarm if you're not seeding or leeching. Then again, does that mean that spoofing the name/id/whatever of the

It's not like WPA2 would be terribly secure either. One minute of googling directs you to a step-by-step tutorial using aircrack. WiFi is nice to have but one has to be aware of the security issues that arise with it.

In Austria it is since the introduction of data retention. Every time someone is assigned an IP address by his or her ISP, an entry is made so IP addresses can be mapped back to the person at any given time. It's pretty much the same across

Well, duh. I don't like all the "login optimization" work that's been done lately. A user name and a password have always served me well. On non-sensitive sites cookies have enabled me to automatically log in whilst the cookies are stored o

Brilliant! Another workaround fixing something that was broken by design. The things that LESS brings you should really have been there in CSS to begin with.

But that's not really sparking a discussion. "Inferior desktop experience" is completely subjective. Personally I think OSX has the worst desktop experience of the three (Windows, Linux and OSX), Windows sits in the middle and Linux is th

Oh, statistically speaking I reckon this could work out just fine. However, Linux hardware support is a lot better than some claim here. The average desktop with it's x86 architecture, usually on-board sound and some mediocre GeForce is s

That hardly an achievement of OSX though. Supporting pretty much a single set of hardware and some variations isn't really hard and does not count as "great hardware support" in my book. That's just one of the advantages you get by selling

If Unix is what you want, you shouldn't be using a system that isn't Unix (or Unix-like in the case of Linux). However, there's still Cygwin which is reasonably good.
