I'd translate "I fought my way to the top" into "Я прохавал эту жизнь с низов". Though the latter reeks of gopnik mentality.

Yeah, my favorite solution of them all is SaltStack. You can literally put jinja2 in any part of state, not into just specific parts like in Ansible. And it's malleable like clay, you can turn SaltStack into a perfect fit for your case

Pretty much. My life went downhill after I discovered that I had disabled search history and re-enabled it

Even better than Ansible is Saltstack or Puppet or Chef. In other words, something that sits on a controlled machine and already knows facts about said machine

The part "I can just plop whatever Unix commands I want in there" resonates with me. For example, I can select several lines and pass them to "sort | uniq -c". Or to "python -m json.tool"

> put about 10k rows into the browser and let the user use ctrl+f to find what they're looking for" which is probably also wrong for all sorts of reasons. I actually use a UI like that, and this particular one is not fun to us

(I am not a real lawyer) but I think it's just little more complex to program. CPU time issues don't matter much, we can design around that. If we pull, say, 1000 rows in the foreground, you have to keep in mind when designing UI

This made me question my belief that DOS is an operating system. If it cannot run programs with (fake) parallelism and doesn't have virtual memory...

It's good that HN is full of webdev stuff. If it was full of high-quality sysadmin stuff then I'd spend whole days here and would not be able to get anything done

I'm a simple guy, I trust the kernel and its devs. If kernel says to me via /sys/ that on this CPU I have to disable SMT if I want to get rid of "Vulnerable" messages, I do so. Kernel considers recent Intel CPUs not

I understand and respect your motive for saying that telegram has no encryption. At the same time I cannot stop hating you for improper use of words. I wish there was a simple and catchy word for describing a "vulnerable to the governm

I would finally read that lengthy bash manual. What gems like /dev/tcp or suspend -f am I missing? Well, I would at least start to read it

My point of view that an analogy cannot possibly be, in your words, "true". Don't you think any analogy is leaky and we shouldn't use them? Any point of view demonstrated with an analogy can be conveyed without it.

If you look at this thread, you will see many people coming up with different analogies, thinking about "what would Ford do" or "what if there is a meth lab". Simply because they saw your analogy and didn't like it

majority of mail servers do not support VRFY command, that is why the generic method of checking mail box is trying to send message (via MAIL FROM + RCPT TO) and breaking the sending halfway through

I think even without metadata server replacement this attack would still be painful. The ability to reconfigure network on a victim sounds painful
