I don’t understand why so many people are convinced that these newfangled automobiles will replace horses. It sounds like unsubstantiated hype to me. There are a few reasons why I don’t believe cars will replace horses anytime soon: 1. Ridi

One advantage (which is touched on in the logging section) is that having it provided by the language makes it clear what the default is, and sets expectations. Essentially, lifting it into the language is a way of coordinating the communit

The example only seems ridiculous because you've deliberately excluded relevant knowledge about the world from the model. Add a prior to the model and you'll have a much more reasonable function to maximise.

The problem (in my opinion) is that Python gives you the tools (and perhaps even encourages you) to write code that would benefit from typing. It's perfectly feasible to write maintainable, well-designed code in a dynamic language. I&#

Yes, that's a nice point - this adds censoring to our "data" on other writing systems. My intuition is that even if you accounted for exposure to an existing alphabet, the time-to-develop alphabet would still be much longer t

Syllabaries have been invented multiple times independently and an alphabet only once, which to me would suggest the alphabetic step is the harder one to make. Why would you suggest the opposite? I'm a complete layperson in this area,

That’s like saying that encryption is a red herring. Yes, the information is there, but recovering it is a different matter. In this case, quantisation allows you to recover the information without knowing the “cypher” used to “forget” it -
