Part of the problem, I suppose, is that it's very hard to figure out what value an employee contributes with. Making salaries transparent is perhaps rational, but it only gets you that far. If the other half was a solved issue, I don&#

Well. I'll call it idiomatic form to use OO style in Ruby, which the article (and my examples) were written in. Considering the interpreted and managed-memory model of the language runtime, it is utterly pointless to worry about a few

I recognise that your tongue and cheek may be in close proximity here, but care to elaborate?

When dealing with business processes, I feel that the evented nature of a formal fsm can be a bit off-putting. I have on several occasions used a batch-processing approach, that maintains state in a persistent record, giving many of the sam

In the db, it's ok to store as decimal, since it's internally an integer. However, unless your language/framework has built-in support for money, you should use a library to deal with it (Or build one). Specifically, you do N

I wouldn't charge different rates. The way I look at it, when I'm charging an hourly rate, the client is paying for my time. What value the client derives from that time isn't really relevant to the cost. Or put another way.

I would say this formula only derives the minimum reasonable rate as a freelancer. It basically ends up netting you the same as you would in a salaried job (adjusted for risks/expenses). But I would say you should be making at least a

Me neither. And cost-of-living doesn't seem that low all together. House prices are almost comparable with northern europe.

Good point. Wouldn't you usually do this on a server and then expose a sane api to the ios app? Who consumes SOAP directly in ios?

I haven't. I just raised the price when I took a new contract. It's the same game as when you're full time employed, except you get to play it 1-2 times a year.

Freelance is a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I've done short jobs in the past, but don't really like that. Now I'm doing longer contracts, with full time engagement and I like it a lot more. After doin

Housing would make a difference in high cost-of-living areas, such as SF, but the others are probably rounding errors with what is, after all, fairly high salaries.

Certainly. The nordic model is basically that the labour market is kept quite liberal, to the benefit of companies, but this is balanced by a strong social security net. This is in contrast to how things work in most of the rest of Europe,

Not that you're wrong, but this is just to remind you that the EU isn't a country. Especially worker-laws varies quite a bit between countries. Surprising perhaps, the nordic countries have very liberal worker-laws, compared to ot

I think this is quite right. But this is even true if the racism is unfounded. The mere illusion that some ethnic groups are low-contributing will weaken the cohesion of society. So in this backwards way, racism becomes a self-fulfilling pr
