I unfortunately don't have a native Linux install currently, just a VM, and my Windows NUC can only connect to my Z27. There's some good info here on minimal USB latency, it's less than 1ms and I don't think mine is an i

In this case what you were experiencing might have been the lack of compositor, which adds a 16ms delay, or just using a slow editor. The theoretically best possible average latency under a compositor model at the top of the screen is 16+(1

Alacritty makes claims about throughput, which is different than latency, and then uses the word "fast" which can be confused to mean either or both. Alacritty's benchmarks are based on how much text it can process being outp

This looks like a nice language with lots of cool features. I especially like the attempts at GPU and off-heap integration. However I feel like at least the landing page dodges a lot of hard questions. For example the biggest reason anyone

I think it should be possible to buy or use software from third parties. One thing I'm disappointed about and think we need better tools to avoid is the fact that third parties provide their tools as services rather than libraries. The

This is also an interesting system in that it's an example of how you can get away with a non-distributed system if your problem is small enough but eventually that falls over. Once you get to large corporation monorepos git operations

Note: I have never worked with an HPC system, take what I say with a grain of salt. I suspect the answer is in the networking, what this article spends most of its time talking about. HPC networking is so ridiculously much better than commo

Indeed! I was talking to someone about their attempt to fork a Graal Java process and recreate all the compiler and GC threads, and I said if I had that task I'd be tempted to just use my new knowledge to implement a fork that also rec

It's what a certain kind of live migration strategy does. There's a discussion thread about this further down where I link to that same page.

Yah that is indeed a super important optimization for avoiding round trips. CRIU does this and calls it "pre-paging", their wiki also mentions that they adapt their page streaming to try to pre-stream pages around pages that have

I didn't say it requires kernel patches, just that it requires a build flag and new enough versions. It does happen that most distros do enable that build flag though. There is a patch set for write protection support in userfaultfd th

I do in fact mention this idea in the article. In fact userfaultfd was added to the kernel so that CRIU and KVM live migration could implement exactly this. Another cool project that does something like this is https://github.com

I really hope they open source their compiler and allow people to program directly to the machine code. Part of the problem with GPUs (and to a greater extent FPGAs) is that the toolchains are often terrible, buggy and opaque. They also mak

FWIW the numbers for my blog are broadly similar, with a larger sample taken when I had a blog post on HN, with about 2x higher unique user numbers from Cloudflare analytics (server side) than Google Analytics.

Not touching 4 digit numbers is a good variant idea, I might do that, it would only be a one line of code change. I also still think an alternative world where we decided to use font shaping for digit grouping would work out better, it woul

You can use the patcher on Github to patch a font of your choice, although underlining currently only works well with some fonts. I also have some good fonts pre-patched on the download site at https://thume.ca/numderline

I would have used Rust if I hadn't already put 10 hours of work into an assignment to write a basic ray tracer, which had to be in C++ unlike the final project.
