This guy has done an admirable job of appropriating the visual style of Scott Hansen, of iso50.net / Tycho, who has been making design in a similar vein for many years. Here are two designs I was immediately reminded of; both because of the

Disclaimer: I work at Cloudkick. Imagine looking at a list of 500 servers and trying to determine how their aggregate memory usage was trending in real-time. To quickly address your concerns: 1. Servers that are critical turn red and blink

Here's a great one that converts between color modes, lets you step up or down mathematical increments by clicking, and gives you a full-window preview while you work. I use it all the time. http://www.drpeterjones.com/colorcalc/

Thank you for standing up for design; it takes a beating around here.

This is the most usable drawing/painting app I've ever tried. There's something in its constrained, simple functionality that's very freeing. I've been playing with this for hours. All I need to do now is hack it to add colors.

You folks may have missed the boat in assuming this is a startup. I think it's more about the idea/message/whatever. These people have other (good) jobs. Cindy Gallop (Founder/CEO) is a (quasi)retired ad exec. Her last web experiment: makel

I think the biggest reason designers should learn to code is this: Knowing how to build a web page lets you begin to grok how the web works. A better understanding the medium will produce better results, in general. In practice, however, in

Theme roller is a cool idea, but the CSS it outputs has so much cruft... It's like they forgot about the cascading part.

+1 Blueprint has good typographic defaults. Adjust for color and you can basically roll with it.

I think it's naive to assume there's anything that happens on HN that isn't socially engineered in some way. Sounds glib, but render down the actions and incentives of participation on the site. In a business-focused environment where the

Gets pretty interesting if you Firebug that select box and ramp the points to 50 or so... EDIT: 100 points and some futzing created so much feedback I ended up with a little cyclone going for a while. EDIT: pic -> http://i.imgur.com/qh

+1 I agree; it's grossly wide and so thin as to be almost illegibly sparkly when it's black-on-white. I don't even want to imagine what this face would look like knocked-out on black. There's also a good comment on the source page about dis

I disagree. I think it's a nicely succinct collection of relevant guidelines that, if used by a beginner, would yield a more aesthetic result than if they just winged it. I'd rather someone read Bringhurst (there's a cool version of the boo

As far as I know, the rationale for placing bullets in the margin is the same as the one for hanging punctuation: we've trained our eyes to return to the beginning of the line and breaking up that rhythm forces you to work a little harder w

I guess it's not really the "flourish". (I like that term for it) What really bothers me is that, on the whole, it feels like the designer put more effort into the flourish than into creating a design that would support and enhance the comm

The absolute worst web design trend of 2009 is this header background that extends beyond the container and makes it look like the header is on a piece of paper that has been folded around the background. Let me show you what I'm talking ab

I take it from your tone, and from the first line of your response, that you think "design and marketing" is nonsense. I'd like to introduce you to this cool company I heard about called Apple (www.apple.com); learning about them could be a

An interesting assertion, given that the design of this device, perhaps more so than any other piece of equipment in recent memory (excepting the iPhone), epitomizes the visual aesthetics of minimalism. It's a cube. The only challenging ele

It could be that you're just not Boxee's target audience. It seems as though there's much less incentive for an individual with a rack full of legacy entertainment equipment to purchase an all-in-one device. Specifically regarding the visua

I've heard from long-time guitarists that the same phenomenon occurs with guitars. One particular codger who I happened to have a long discussion with insisted that the wood fibers slowly realign as a result of the constant vibration. He cl

I recently noticed that if I put on something extremely hard or caustic - some kind of screamy metal like Protest the Hero or Tool - and turn the volume up to the point where I can't hear anything else, I stop noticing the music altogether.
