I remember the tolls like that as well. The Ohio Turnpike had them as late as 2000, IIRC.

A lot of that book took into account real life events and people. Unfortunately I don't have specifics on that one, so hopefully the parent does. Also, that book is fantastic, as are the prequels.

This is very true. I live in the DC area and the number of ridiculous "clean coal" ads plastered all over public transit and TV/radio here is insane. Lobbyists will be the death of us all.

Dude, this isn't aimed at you. It's aimed at wealthy people. People who have so much money that they write the rules against not only you and the rest of the 99% of suckers in the world, but also for the rich, who make up 1.5% of

Ooooh going to see how this matches up with my personal list/the one my company uses for data engineers. Will definitely submit feedback if I feel like something huge is missing. Thanks for posting this! Hugely helpful since I've

Yes. It is ok. I hate that we've made it a norm to expect everyone to have the same hobby -- exactly the thing you do at work, and it better damn well be a hobby that you can monetize. Some people code and live on the MeetUp circuit

Why was this downvoted? I literally thanked the poster for sharing this because it was interesting and a thing I may have to run into soon. I'm sorry you're all offended that I'm on legacy projects right now and we're n

Someone sent me this a few weeks ago, and I've been playing with loading his datasets into a graph database. It's kind of a mess of CSV and some column formatted files, but it's a fun process. Will share if I make something

That wasn't immediately relevant to me, but is definitely a good read since I imagine I'll be dealing with these problems within a year. Thanks!

This! And the two can coexist as well -- Data lake for everything (partitioned appropriately) and modern data warehouse for the stuff from your data lake that you want to curate (of course with partially structured intake first).

You know what service had both communities of interest that thrived AND individual followings AND wasn't overrun with Nazis? Google Plus. Now excuse me while I shed no tears for Jack.

Once Google Reader died, I found The Old Reader (theoldreader.com) and just ran with that. I never stopped using RSS, and trying to get syndication from Twitter would cause my head (and my Twitter feed for things I actually care about) to e

That's what I took from it. Forbes is aimed at the people buying solutions so from the perspective of a CIO or CTO (or even the people they're supporting with their analysis systems), the article is telling them that they may not

So much this. It's why data engineering ends up being more and more useful, even if it's not sexy. Automating the boring parts of dumping all the ugly data and cleaning up the stuff that is sampled is a better use of resources.

I loved the tone of this article because it's fairly relevant, and with a small facelift, could have been advice to web developers circa the early 2000s. Data science is still a thing, and it's maturing in the way that applied sci

I've been saying this for years, because I started doing web apps when we pretty much were sending raw SQL over to a database. Even after ORMs got bigger, I still stress knowing SQL even if you don't use it often, because it help
