No. On-site, in Zurich. They have arrangements with authorities to get work permits more easily (it made a lot of debate in the press). They "import" qualified workers, paid Swiss salaries. If price was the only matter, that would

That's very much untrue. EDIT: I stand corrected - this misses the point. Sure, wages are lower than elsewhere (especially Switzerland), but the quality of engineers in eastern europe is very high. Case in point: Google Switzerland emp

As a developer in Switzerland, I'm unfortunately not surprised. Maybe Swiss firms have a real arrogance problem (not all, but many). If it makes you feel any "better", your country of origin is not the reason (I get comments

While you are right, I feel compelled to point out that mechanical luxury watches are expensive not because of IP (they expired long ago, as you point out), but because they are: 1. Assembled by hand (in Switzerland, for the most famous bra

I'm surprised and a little saddened that this is not higher up. The root cause of the problem is that there are too many people wanting to move to San Fransisco because that's where the (tech) jobs are. Spread out the jobs to spre

Maybe slack gets enough momentum to overtake IRC. Right now it looks a lot like Google Wave to me.

Your experience of IRC clients seems like a bad one, I'm sorry about that. Have you heard of irccloud.com? You should check it out. My mum could use it (I'm not affiliated with them in any way besides being a happy customer).

Oh, TIL. So I can point my run-off-the-mill IRC client to a slack server and partake in cat pictures exchanging and almost-NSFW-but-not-quite with my fellow coworkers, yes? Otherwise whatever it uses inside its walled garden is completely i

If only there was a well supported, standard, open and interoperable text messaging protocol (with multiple implementations) that companies could host themselves... Oh wait, IRC.

Thanks, but that's still not saying what was flaky. In fact it doesn't point out any problems with LXC at all except a general hand-wavy statement about stability (which sounds a lot like NIH-justification). I was looking for actu

I'm going to ask you for your source here. Not because I don't take your argument at face value, but because I'm interested to know what exactly they consider flaky.

I'd say your choice of OS is very relevant, on the contrary: A big part of that wave (namely LXC and LXD) is a Canonical project. That's what docker used for a long time (until, in my humble opinion, they decided they needed to di

That would be because Mint is pretty much Ubuntu (it uses the Ubuntu archives and packages). There is added UI customisation on top, but that's irrelevant to it working better or not as a VMware guest.

So maybe my comment stems from ignorance. Are you saying that two Golang projects sharing the same (large, for the sake of the argument) dependency would not take (size of the dependency * 2) on i.e. the Ubuntu live CD (as was the example i

That's pretty much the only reason I cringe every time somebody writes a piece of client code in golang. While I really like the language itself, statically linking everything is creating exactly what this article describes. Burn karma
