It's a bit mind-blowing to me how big browser apps have become the last few years. Firefox 80 takes up 210.8MB and Chrome _689.8MB_ on my MacBook.

I was in an Uber rideshare once with a blind person. Had no idea they were blind until the driver pulled over and got out (which initially confused me) to help them to their house.

Damn, this is a buzzkill for me. I just built a new computer a month ago and was hoping to get a Hackintosh setup working but didn't do much research into it beforehand. Why will Nvidia GPUs never work? Because they won't publish

Oh wow, this actually helped me fix it. I had to downgrade to 1Password4 for Windows (no mention my license only works with that version), and after that I was able to enter my old license key. By hidden I meant the downloads page is only l

Yep, super annoying for me as well. I paid $60 which I feel is quite a lot for a password manager. When I built my new computer the other weekend I found everything on 1Password's site was subscription-walled, I finally found a downloa

Since the article is login-walled I can only generally comment. The hard part of competing against Google is they have seemingly infinite discretionary money and computing power to throw at a problem. Normal businesses have to be profitable

I hate to laugh when people's hard work is being destroyed, but this is some impressive trolling by the attacker: > An interesting theory as to why the attacker used the term "meow" is because cats like to drop (or knock)

Now I'm confused, are you saying Amazon uses Hack internally which compiles to PHP? The Hack website doesn't have much info and I'm not familiar with it. There's clearly an Amazon Github repo for an an AWS SDK written in

I think Apple is pushing for the same thing that helped NodeJS get really popular: using the same language across your entire stack. In a perfect world Apple can have their devs use Swift to build an iOS/macOS app or help out with serv

If anything it will force analytics SDK makers to make their code leaner. I find it hard to believe that analytics SDKs need to be so bloated. And I think the goal is to get users creating accounts with Apple Sign-In rather than Facebook. I

While we are on the topic of file formats, I stumbled across a cool project the other day that aims to make parsing well-known binary formats much easier: http://kaitai.io/ In high school I was obsessed with the game Starcr

I tried Zoom's breakout rooms (~8 people per) for a virtual birthday party and it didn't work well. The audio delay made it really hard to have a free-flowing conversation which then made others feel bad when trying to step in. IM

It's been several years since I've used Java, but from what I remember most devs rarely catch unchecked exceptions (like out of bounds access) in their code.

I have friends who are police that post videos of their gun training to social media. One exercise involves speeding up to an area in their cruiser and quickly coming to a stop. Then they exit the vehicle and use their door as cover while s

I'm really hoping Swift breaks out of the app ecosystem soon and becomes mainstream on Linux, it's a joy to write and has a great compiler team behind it. Still missing some big features but I think they will be solved in Swift6.

What I find weird about the article is that they spend so much time talking about the performance of the new design, yet fail to include any hard numbers comparing the old vs new implementations. They do throw out a few numbers like how the

Genuinely curious here, which apps have you kept and use daily? The number of monetized apps that don't talk to Google/FB (or other install trackers) is likely in a very small minority.
