The problem I was alluding to in my original post is that the user is divorced from the engineering decisions -- as if there can be a better way of building something that doesn't take into account the very reason that it exists at all. I s

I should have said that I found the technique interesting and insightful. Learning doesn't happen without engagement -- that's the key point. I just thought it was a bit disingenuous to ignore what Khan Academy is beyond video lectures &

Essentially this is a critique of lectures and traditional teaching models which unfortunately uses Khan Academy as a pretext for discussing how lectures don't work very well. The tiny feedback loop that Khan Academy quizzes provide just re

The qualitative assessment of the plant's design is outside the scope of what I'm commenting on. I'm referring to the journalistic bait-and-switch which hides a very relevant piece of information (that contradicts the implied assertion of t

Real costs associated with building out a datacenter are significant. I'd be surprised if building and operating a warehouse comes anywhere near the cost of building and operating a datacenter. You've got things like generators, HVAC, PDUs

I'm not sure whether it's that "HN seems to want a heavy dose of finality..." or if we're just naturally inclined to want good news in the face of overwhelmingly bad news. I keep on thinking of Akira Kurosawa's "Dreams..." (One of the segme

Actually, I meant it the other way around; what's popular isn't necessarily what's better. I personally like coding in Erlang more than JS. I also personally feel the smart technology choice is Erlang -- it scales better. For me, Erlang is

Yeah, for certain. I guess I just really, really like the ability to have some control. Even if it isn't solving the problem. Back when I was working for a shop doing OpenVZ, all we could do is shrug our shoulders & make our best guess

I've never seen a hardware node get anywhere near saturating the bus before disk I/O became an issue. So yes, there is a potential for saturation; however, I'd be really happy if that were my capacity bottleneck.

For your better quality VPS providers, memory isn't really an issue because memory is dedicated. For your old time OpenVZ/Virtuozzo low-end box, that's not the case. You can oversell every resource on an OpenVZ box... Back in the day SW-Sof
