Yeah I think in retrospect this comment was sort of silly. We all read this post hoping that they were giving away a real time free financial data API (that would be huge), but really that's how they make money. They just want to change th

I'm not convinced that they're actually offering the data for free here. Merely the use of the API is now free (You used to have to actually purchase Bloomberg terminals/hardware to use it). I've emailed both of their contact addresses re

node.js is different. It's not a language, it's a small/extensible set of tools built on top of a solid language, and VM (V8) that are very mature. Node.js is in great hands with Isaac. Unlike many other web/network platforms node doesn't

My main concern here is that Adobe's new flash plugin will allow some of these things for 3d on the web and set back adoption of WebGL to the point that it's also DOA. I know mouse capture seems like a security concern to many browser vendo

Your writing style is awesome, especially from a fellow developer's point of view. What are you currently doing now that this startup has failed?

We just had a comments model (in mongoose) that had an array of subcomments (MongoDB arrays are awesome). Therefore the "trees" (not really trees as we implemented it) could only have one level of indentation ... but that's all we wanted a

I think a hybrid system would actually best. Otherwise posts that don't get many votes wouldn't update their score. The best would probably actively update on votes and do a catchall operation on ones that haven't been voted on or all on a

Store a "score" to rank by in the database and then use some sort of time dependent function. AKA when you search the mongo for posts sort by "score." Our score was calculated by something like this: var gravity = 1.5; var score

I think you may be over generalizing here. Yes there are vast similarities between MongoDB and other NoSQL databases but many of the issues he pointed out here are specific to MongoDB (and certain versions of it at that).

I'm moving there in about a week to work on a startup with a friend. I've been on the lookout for people to get to know in the area.

As someone who has spent the last six months coding in Node.js, I completely disagree with this notion. One of my favorite advantages of Node is in fact that it is based on javascript. When building my application I can share code between

It can be really hard to get your bearings sometimes if things are all the same shape/size, especially if there isn't many people in the app. It needed a central location or gathering point so I figured why not throw a giant obelisk thingy
