Hmm, I wonder if they attempt to control for bias. It sounds as though they were asking random passersby if they wanted a COVID-19 antibody test. If so, it seems that the sample group could be biased toward including more people who suspect

I know exactly what you mean! This is why, to me, the text adventure genre was always so fantastic.

Makes sense. Private/smaller collectors are probably much more likely to end up with fake items. Having said that, large, institutional museums do end up with fake items occasionally as well, sometimes displaying them for years before

Ran into the "paywall", but yeah, sadly, forgery has grown into a very large problem in the archaeological world. Lots of debate and controversy over how best to address it. We can't simply disregard all unprovenanced finds,

Perhaps somewhat true, but I was around SV in the '90s and the same phony startup culture was alive and well back then, perhaps even more than today.

Unfortunately, I do not believe that this is true. My understanding is that it's still quite common, and even more so in developing countries.

My previous ISP actually just blocked all DNS traffic that wasn't to/from their servers. I had to tunnel my DNS traffic (ridiculous!)...

Ah, yes. The sort command definitely has a few gotchas like this. It's too bad that we all seem to learn them the hard way. :) Another one that used to bite me: locale-dependent sorting. These days, I rarely use the sort command withou

Thanks for the input! I hope the sociopath comment wasn't triggered by my question. I tend to question widespread assumptions, perhaps more often than I ought to. But I find that, more often than not, people don't have a good reas

From my personal experience, the vast majority of bugs happen due to an astounding failure on the part of developers to consider even the most basic edge conditions. Also, terrible contract documentation...

Something to perhaps consider: if both groups of 10 people are experiencing a bug, especially one not caused by their own doing, why is one group more "deserving" of a fix than the other?

I'd add to this that, among the changes that happen to language, there are those that are true, organic, and grass-roots, but also there are those that are forced, manipulative, and agenda-driven. :-)
