Thanks for the review. I used Kagi for a bit and then forgot about it, time to try it again. If Orion is based on webkit, what other advantages does it offer over Safari that you found?

There was a highly recommended book where you followed along with cpu or architecture design and then bootstrapped a compiler. I can’t find it now. Does anyone know what I’m talking about?

Well, I’ve got a garmin inreach that uses iridium and it’s been quite reliable. Inreach mini is cell phone sized… of course it’s super low bandwidth so I assume that’s what’s gonna happen with the new functionality as well. Anyway all specu

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago [0]. The Pentagon Wars [1] is an interesting book about how military systems are developed. They also made a movie. 0: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32056507 1: https:/

Such a great point. What are you some stable environments in our industry? Are they going to be stable in 5-10-15 years? I wish I picked Emacs up a while back. It seems to be stable. Compilers are stable, I think. A tenured computer science

You may not be giving them enough credit. Last ice age was roughly 10,000 years ago. At these time scales it's difficult to predict what's going to happen... Of course lets not forget the costs either. Someone has to pay for this.

Why the downvotes I wonder? The rubber band trick is particularly effective for becoming mindful about certain reactions. It interrupts the pavlovian cycle. Op writes: > I've tried deleting work apps from my phone, but I still find

I find that past a certain size, even exploratory code base benefits from having tests. Otherwise, as I'm hacking, I end up breaking existing functionality. Then I spend more time debugging trying to figure out what changed.. what'

Exactly. Nobody's on board with paying at least twice as much for software though. But that's what you get when things change and you have to refactor BOTH your code AND your tests.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, but it’s a different problem. The labour shortage is not constrained to just IT — it’s a global trend. This is one of those things that reasonably easy to verify. Check out the population pyramid in

Most knowledge transfers I’ve been a part of, have been “theatre”. Even when the effort is done in good faith it’s impossible to transfer more than the high level knowledge. Unless there’s a consistent effort to document the system through

As an employee I would love for this to be true. But I think employers, especially in North America will resist this. There’s already a worker shortage and with the boomer generation retiring we are going to lose further workers. Don’t see

Good answers here already. I'll throw in C4 Model [0] in here. It's a tool to visualize how system components connect at various level. Unit tests, and code will help you understand the system bottom up. Documenting with C4 will g
