I believe the gp was talking about the year of unemployment referred to in the original post. I was laid off for about a month earlier this year and it was the most productive I’ve ever been, open source contributions wise. Pragmatically, I

The intent is to learn and produce and be an able to talk about rather than try to make money.

I tried https://jitsi.org , open source video conferencing, the other day and it worked just fine. I didn't use the camera, so not entirely sure how well that piece of works but at least there are options other than google.

I struggle with code like this (also, complicated piped shell statements). How do you debug/reason about this? I know this specific example may be an exercise, but still.

macOS has it built in, as does windows. There’s a mention of yabai upthread which takes it to the next level.

Great answer. > (2) I write a lot of runbook documentation and I'm also disciplined about project setup. Sometimes I dread bringing a project out of mothballs after 9 months but time and time again I find my docs, follow them step b

With a list like this it's kinda hard to tell what's interesting and what is not. I'm familiar with fzf and it deserves more love if you're a shell user. Essentially it's a completion/selection framework. You p

Hammerspoon is awesome. I have an `hs_message` alias that basically calls `hs.alert`. Super handy. The good thing about xbar is that you can quickly write small shells scripts. But I definitely love HS for global shortcuts/automation.

That’s brilliant. I imagine waterproof socks also keep the moisture in as well? Is it worth it?

I’m nowhere near as accomplished as skurka, but I have some back country experience and I agree with him completely. Cheaper waterproof (not breathable) layers with ventilation (pit zips on jackets and full length zippers on pants) is the w

Maybe I should've said "cleaning". Camping/offroading, it gets pretty grimy both inside and out. Hand carwashes here do the outside clean/wipe and then an interior clean (vacuum, wipe, etc). I tried to replicate it,

When I looked for a job 6 months ago, I had the same experience. A dozen applications and no responses. Working with recruiters that put me in front of a hiring person was how I ended up finding my current job.

Cleaning. I hate paying for work that I can do myself, but I simply can't clean as well as professional cleaners. Even I spend more time than they do. Same with washing/detailing my car, especially if there's a team working o

I built a Mobile workstation out of an old dslr tripod after I saw one on Amazon (0). Game changer for me. I can use it sitting down like a traditional desk, or standing up. Occasionally I bring it all the way down and squat in front of it

Sound advice, but that ship has sailed. This is an existing lambda that I'm refactoring so I need to be able to "go through the front door", as it were. Once I become more familiar with the code, I'll be able to test ind

I just started working with Lambda, so my experience may just be the teething pains, but. I find the developer experience a bit jarring. My lambda is in python, but every time I want to test my code I have to "build" the lambda wi

You give owners more credit than they are due. There’s no planning there, it’s all a happy little accident. Also, let’s tear down our manufacturing plant and rebuild it from scratch every 2 years just to make sure we can.

Sounds reasonable but misses the mark, sorry. Once you become a manager you rapidly lose hands on skills. The big picture never goes away, but the details go pretty quick. If you don’t use, you do lose it.
