The fun thing is that you could do the same thing in C# before async/await :-). http://tomasp.net/blog/csharp-async.aspx/

It is an academic publication by Springer. That's why - academic publishing is just crazy. (Anybody around here doing a start-up that would make it obsolete?) I would, of course, never suggest downloading the PDF from unofficial source

I'd say that even for more practical persons, skipping the historical parts would be partly missing the point. As a practical person myself, I enjoyed the less-obvious works much more because they show a different way of thinking and s

Popper is definitely important! He's not on the list because I didn't read his works (I know I should). His key points are widely known that I was simply more interested in reading books that go in other directions. (There is also

The article isn't saying that letting errors happen is the best way to go about things in all cases. There is certainly room for proof and extreme caution! That said, you do not need to prove everything about your algorithm. I imagine

This blog post might give you some good ideas: http://fsharpforfunandprofit.com/posts/low-risk-ways-to-use-... That said, people have used F# for pretty much everything - including data science and analytics, domain mo

There is a lot of truth in this. I think there is a shift happening slowly that simply needs to progress and happen fully. With more developer stuff coming from Microsoft embracing open-source, people just need to realize that Microsoft is

I think it is important to realize that the .NET OSS ecosystem is not something that has been around for a long time. In the F# community, it truly started working as an "OSS ecosystem" only a couple of years ago - and the rest of

R is... _interesting_ language. Its main power really comes from the comprehensive libraries that are available. I think there is an interesting option if other languages can figure out how to make the R libraries easily accessible in their

I'd say this is close, with a slight twist. Insisting on a formal definition that would work across contexts is harmful. If someone comes up with one, that's nice (I doubt this). But even then, others might come up with "ty

It is kind of funny that F# 4.0 got to the top of Hacker news while F# 3.0 with the type providers (which is an amazing innovation, if you ask me) didn't get that much publicity when it came out. I think it's just a matter of timi

Not that anyone should take the TIOBE ranking seriously - as discussed in other thread, the methodology is not reliable (and the fluctuation is suspicious too) - but it's interesting to see F# high on the list.

I guess it's more difficult than shifting the focus towards industrial use cases. Industrial use cases are a great thing, but it is something that the industry has to provide :-) (we tried to do something like that for F# here: http:&

Can I please quote your debating which particular brand of natural spring water should be given to millions of people who are thirsty in the desert when I get a chance :-)? It is a great summary of the problem with functional programming.

I completely agree with your observation, but I'm not sure what is the point that you're trying to make here :-). F# is open-source and has a very active community that is contributing to many core parts - including the tooling (

To be honest, I think that "not getting the love it deserves from MS" is the best thing that happened to F# :-). They did really good job at supporting the community - by open-sourcing F# and now also accepting contributions to th

Not sure why the negative attitude..? A great thing about FAKE is that it can be used without worrying much about the context. Yes, it is written in F# and F# is mainly functional, but FAKE is just a great tool for anyone - and as Scott cor

I quite like what Apiary.io is doing! The services they provide are really useful for developing & testing REST services, but it is also cool because the service can be used for somewhat unexpected things :-). I have used their API from
