Partly it boils down to the sort of problem you're trying to solve. I find that if your problem is not very domain-specific; ie if you can strip out the labels, and consider what you're doing as manipulations of relatively abstract objects;

On the other hand, high levels of pre/extra-marital sex also correlate strongly with higher levels of STD infection. The Catholic church is pretty strongly against that too.

I agree entirely. Whenever I leave out writing unit tests, I end up with a web of messy interdependencies which ends up far too hard to extend, and will always need refactored as soon as I need to add the smallest feature. Writing unit test
