It's great seeing Livius getting some attention, and on hackernews of all places. Ab Urbe Condita is really much more of an epic tale than a proper history book by modern standards, even though, as Deveraux notes, the later bits are pr

I agree in part that it's a C thing. More accurately it's an offset from the array base thing. The first element is at index 0 because its address is base + 0 * sizeof(element) The second element is at index 1 because its address

I think it's a fair assumption that every soldier is equally likely to die. Zero bias is the easiest one to qualify here. If the greek were less likely to die, how much less likely would that be exactly? I don't see how that could

what evokes it for me is the con- prefix, which means "together" or "with". Concise should mean something like "together-cut". I did look it up, and the latin dictionaries give "fallen together" or &q

I always thought concise was about resolving multiple things at once. Cutting two birds with one slice so to say.

Look around Europe and you can see it. The reason US city development is a money hole is because you do city-level urban services in sprawling communities. The tax-payer density is just not high enough to economically support the cost of th

vi/vim/neovim has a very consistent interface. It does have a learning curve but it is very pleasant to use once you've learned it. A bonus is that you can now edit text on pretty much any machine without installing anything,

That's not the alternative at all. The alternative is sensible city planning with mixed zoning neighborhoods that create comfortable centers all around the city. Add metros, bike lanes, and parks and you have a pleasant city instead of

I agree, and what better way than to impose a tax on consumption after X dollars. Or perhaps even a general luxury tax for goods that aren't absolutely necessary for your welfare. Still better would be to start taxing natural resource

They still aren't decoupled from emissions. IIRC Emissions actually grow faster than GDP, so it's actually worse than a simple coupling: it's a feedback coupling. All studies that have looked at seeming decoupling of emission

No credible way to decouple production/consumption from emissions has been found. So no, we do need to start curbing consumption, especially among people in the top wealth quantiles (because they consume the most).

This is just modularisation though. You can modularise without microservices. Microservices solve a scaling problem, not a design flexibility problem.

Competition is good, Amazon's practices are bad for competition. Inviting Amazon to NYC with tax incentives is similar to planting a great white shark in a small lake, injecting the local fish with sedatives and the shark with a mix of

We're talking about competing businesses not workers. And funny enough, more jobs at Amazon also means less worker supply for competing businesses. So even that is anti-competitive in a roundabout way. (Even though, yes, high worker de

IMO, attack the message, not the messenger. Pointing out flaws in an argument is good, but assuming malice hurts the discussion. Now we are suddenly talking about the morality of the poster instead of the issue at hand.

As far as I can tell, this is a relevant proof when searching through high-dimensional parameter spaces (e.g. machine learning). This would mean that overall geometry is not a (big) factor when it comes to getting stuck on local optima. Dep
