I've noticed the same thing, though I already left quite a while ago. It saddens me because when I first moved there the country provided a lot of opportunity and I grew a ton. I used to really like living there, in London specifically

The treefile allows you to define arbitrary config files to inject into the image.

Yes you're right, better wasn't a good choice of words. My comment was in the context of replacing Ansible with Nix for making a reproducible system, as per the linked article. I wanted to point out that alternative which will be

There's the treefile [1] for declarative config, no need to learn RPM, just add package names and any extra config. As for managing home and multiple versions simultaneously, I think those are non-goals for this tool. [1] https:/

The problem Nix wants to solve is a valid one. But there are better alternatives imo, such as the newer distros based on rpm-ostree. You can do atomic upgrades, and easily rollback to a previous known good state if needed. No changes are al

Hard disagree. In the context of a team, just about any mainstream tool will be more manageable in the long run. There aren't that many people willing to grok Nix and its massive learning curve.

You can hardly blame the tool for that, it's your process that's flawed.

15 minutes to configure a local VM for development with Ansible? That feels very off. It used to take me about that long to set up a Kubernetes cluster on remote VMs from scratch (with etcd, load balancing, etc.). I haven't used it for

Having lived there, I'm always amazed by the landscapes the Dutch create. They seem to have this ability to seamlessly integrate nature, water and modern architecture in a way I haven't really seen anywhere else. Truly beautiful p

There's plenty wrong with git from a usability standpoint. We've all grokked it over time but it's far from having a good UX.

Looks great! Thank you for sharing, you are an inspiration building this at 77. I can only hope to still love what I do and have the motivation at that age.

Yeah, capitalism 101, good in theory but terrible for most people in practice. Look at e.g. the health system, where a major issue means total bankruptcy and life debt. A somewhat balanced system where governments protect basic needs and ha

I think any technology must be judged based on what it turns out to be long term. Computers and vehicles, for all their issues, have brought untold advancement and comfort to society. Social media.. well you tell me.

I see your point, the problem with social media is the exposure and scale. Kids these days can't fool around like we did, someone is always recording and you can go viral. I read not long ago about kids with severe anxiety in school du

I've been thinking for a while now, as we've had social media for many years already. What good has it brought to society? Scams, addiction, FOMO, cancel culture, gossip, missinformation, bullying, and the most self-centered gener

I think networking is way overrated since there's Linkedin. Unless you need very specific contacts or something, recruiters will reach out and about 10% will have great roles. Sure, a direct connection might get you an opportunity fast

After so many years I no longer use Google at all, for anything. In particular with search, all those ads showing as organic results at the top drove me away. I switched to DDG and have been in general happy with it.
