Not only that but nowadays they also no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

What do you mean by this? If they just wanted to make an example out of him then he gave them a very easy way to "find" to do so, considering we are observing it via satellite maps.

The novelty is that they tested this one theory instead of just proposing it as an explanation. The introduction of this paper lists some other explanations that you may or may not have seen in the past and it says some have been disproven

Funny that the routes and towns map is the same as the in game map, except it's sort of mirrored North-South around pallet town. So instead of starting clockwise out of pallet town in game, you would start counter-clockwise on this gen
