It's almost as if programming languages should support integers, rather than just machine words. Or, put differently: Fixed-Width "Integers" Usually Harmful.

Do you think that, generally, if someone needs an app to do something they've just thought of, that there should exist some way for them to build it themselves? If not, why not? We will know the age of "personal computing" ha

You're right that CSP has been influential more generally, but it doesn't relate directly enough to the history of the actor model, which is the focus here. (Though you can see, in the first paper specifically about CSP from 1978,

Exactly. Data is necessary to make control flow decisions; the purely behavioural approach suffers infinite regress without some form of concrete data. I suspect that this problem was one of the reasons later actor languages came to include

You're quite right -- take a look at the original 1973 paper [1], "A Universal Modular ACTOR Formalism for Artificial Intelligence". The "universal" there is intended to mean, among other things, a uniform actor mod

That's roughly it. I was referring to a difference at the type system level, rather than the runtime level, though. Disjoint unions aka sum types (as seen in Haskell/ML etc) entail some runtime way of keeping track which side of t

They're both sums, but Pony (and e.g. Typed Racket) has unlabelled unions, while Haskell/ML have labelled unions. Pony's (X | None) is not like Haskell's Maybe X in that in Haskell, X could be unit, while in Pony tha

If I understood the article correctly, the ~1ms cost came from having rsyslog running, not from printk. Killing rsyslog led to a ~1ms speedup, but it was removing printk() that led to the rest. Printing to the console on the RPi could invol

Can you expand on what you mean by "data dependency" and "cells-like behaviour" in this context? I'm afraid I'm drawing a blank on the terminology.
