If it isn't clear from the title: this is direct air capture of CO2. This is begging for some number play! I'm imaging the production of bricks of dry ice and comparing it to regular clay bricks since I'm in a hurry. Is dry i

I'm just reading this before work, but it must warrant more follow up. Wales doesn't want to step down until Wikipedia is safe from "outside interests who do not understand our values". It's easy to imagine the sort

It's nice that this is getting some attention, but I hope it results in good policy! Other stories I've bumped into: Trump's executive order - I guess this is now defunct: https://www.theregister.com/2020/

Interesting data! The "current employment situation (if previously employed)" (hovering around 97%) plots don't seem to agree with the "percent of individuals who currently have a job" which is slowly crawling up th

These are neat, but is there an explanation for how/why these actually work? (Joke alert!) What sort of n00b just copies and runs random shell commands from the internet without understanding them? (End 'joke)

I've never used sympy, but perhaps I should! Is this a tool meant to save people pages of math derivations, sort of like Maple? Is that how it's generally used?

This was an awesome read! Free enterprise at its best. Another happy message in these times of corporate dominance of everything: “Small town grocery stores are having kind of a renaissance because of COVID-19,” he says. “Everyone is stuck

This was my experience bringing my own Linksys separate modem and router. A couple of months ago my Internet randomly went out. The issue was something with the line. I just had to tell the lady on the phone which lights were blinking. A te

For generally improving writing, I'm a big fan of "The Art of Scientific Storytelling" by Rafael Luna. It's a short, focused book that walks you through writing an easy (well... easier) to read scientific manuscript.

Has this intensified recently? I thought this was already going on to a degree. I remember reading a story on HN awhile ago about a lawyer for hire who could get any change he wanted through Wikipedia's system. It'd be a disaster

PCA is great. I like this paper where it holds its own against all the fancy nonlinear techniques: https://lvdmaaten.github.io/publications/papers/TR_Dimension... When have you needed something stronger than PCA?

This was a fun read (until the grim conclusion I guess), but what is the word for this phenomena? Tribalism? Religion? Be sure to stop and consider: would YOU give up all your friends in search of the truth?
