I can't stand the chromatic aberration theme of the site. Please stop giving me a headache! On my phone I had to copy and paste the contents into a note in order to read it.

Don't worry about the bookmark collection you already have. There's no pressure to read through it and no pressure to throw it away. That's the great thing about a digital hoarding habit -- it doesn't fill up your house

That took a sudden turn! Normally I just go to Slate Star Codex when I want a mixture of sparkling insight and teleological fiction -- though at least there the fiction is clearly labelled. Back in 2010 I made the prediction that (regardles

This was a solved problem 15 years ago with multi-protocol clients like LICQ, Gaim/Pidgin and Trillian. Maybe it's harder these days to keep up with the engineers at Facebook, Google and Microsoft but surely simple texting can

See prospect theory [1]. But I think GP is approaching it in the right way to avoid these suboptimal biases: set reasonable limits up-front but otherwise treat it as a game. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prospect_th

I just want to add another story, albeit second hand. My wife went through surgery three times. The first times, pain relief (after the initial nerve block) was mainly via a Norspan patch. The patch was great except it took so long to ramp

I think it's a bit misleading to put your advice (which is good advice) in the context of experimental treatment. In my experience the cruelty is more likely to come from applying standard treatment that is either hopeless or unnecessa

Embrace it like Philip Greenspun. The tag line to his blog: "A posting every day; an interesting idea every three months..." (Which is about right. Most of his posts these days are trolling but there are still gems in there.)

This is a huge deal with drugs that can cost $10k per vial. The manufacturers have no incentive to test for longer periods: it would just mean less revenue and more risk. And as I've mentioned before, physicians are very conservative a
