Did they intend for it to be a formal contract? I feel that for every major, an introduction to business/contract law unit should be undertaken if only to educate people on the formal rules that surround the contracts everyone enters in to

I feel if this ancient Chinese wisdom were accurate, you could substantiate it with some kind of study, and the "Ancient Chinese wisdom" part would be merely an amusing anecdote relevant to the data.

For me, I have no problem running my own contacts/calendar server with calDAV/cardDAV support. I really hate running email servers though - and it's really nice to have your contacts and calendars integrated with your webmail.

The difference is that stores can't preemptively detect I'm going to steal something and bar my entry. Websites can. As far as I'm concerned anything you send to my web client I can display or choose not to display in any way I want. If you
