Over the last 2 years, I've built a number of Facebook apps. For the ones that go big, they go big fast! When we started out our business in 2008, we needed to double our capacity every week for 6 weeks. I spent a lot of time adding server

I missed that part. I only saw the part about the programming language's RNG - which set off a red flag for me.

On a quick scan of the start of this article, the one thing that jumped out was that the pictures were randomized using the programming language's native random number generator. I didn't see what language was used here, but it could be the

If you add Varnish, you'll still need Apache. If you switch to nginx, then you probably won't need varnish at all and can replace Apache. The nginx config is much, much, much easier to work with than Apache. Transferring complex rewrite ru

But it turns out that making cheap plastic bricks is quite hard to do right. Lego's outsourcing failed and they pulled it back in-house: http://www.evolvingexcellence.com/blog/2009/03/legos-newfoun... I think you have to decide: Is this

Am I the only one here who doesn't like the basic premise of this service? Why is a handwritten note better than an email? I would argue that it is because the handwritten note is more authentic and genuine. If you then pay someone else t

Technically, I guess you could, but this would be a quite a long way from what Git is good at - text files. Git does a bunch of compression of changes that works well for text, and doesn't work at all for binary files. Your pulls and pus

The hardest part of moving to a new service is moving the data over. For a small app, you can do the 'stop everything; copy data; restart everything on new location' thing in a short amount of time without annoying too many people. If you

I'd go with Heroku to start. Its free to start, but does jump quickly to $36/month, and you can decide at that time where you want to take it - more Heroku, VPS, dedicated etc. I haven't used Heroku, but then I haven't deployed a 'small' r

I've used Git on Windows for over a year. msysgit is great, once you've worked out the line endings (the installation asks you for this setting) Using the windows CMD shell works fine. Git comes with its own SSH that works different to oth

Cryptic Crosswords, unlike other crosswords, have specific structures to their clues. You can't read the clue as its written, you have to 'de-crypt' the clue to understand what it is saying. My wife bought a short book (probably from Amazo

There was post on this same subject just last week: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1815504 There is clearly a problem to be solved here. The key is to keep the 'big names' out of it to stop them drowning out the little guys. But th

It's based on the Facebook API, so it at least makes sense to write some of it in PHP. I've seen this way too often where people seem to think that you need to write in PHP to use Facebook. This is absolutely incorrect and false! I've sh

My Safari Online subscription is probably the best $43 per month I spend. My usage is usually patchy - not evenly spread out over the year, but when I do use it, I like to get a dozen books together to cover different aspects of the same pr

Here's a different approach to this problem - Take your home network with you! I recently signed up for Clearwire's CLEAR service. They have a MiFi component that does "4G" with fallback to 3G if necessary. This gives me up to about 3MBs,

Before Unicorn, traditional setups with Nginx + mongrel_cluster, Nginx + Thin, Apache + mongrel_cluster, Apache + Thin, do exactly the same thing. Actually, this isn't entirely correct. Traditional setups with nginx have needed HAProxy i

I'm in a very similar position - done an exit, taking some time off, have some money to invest. I have yet to find a group that doesn't advertise that they need experience. I would guess that some of them would bend this rule if you got in

Domain names aren't case sensitive. You can write your domain as IcarusSystems.com without breaking anything. This technique seems to be underused on the web, and I don't know why this is - perhaps no-one knows you can do this?

Offbeat Creations is looking for a great Flash programmer to do client/server work interfacing to our Rails backend, and a great Rails programmer to build backends for our soon-to-be-awesome Flash front ends (we also do web front ends too!)
