Most "vim emulation" plugins suck, because the vim way of thinking about things is so different from the typical GUI editor. Because of this, extension APIs often have to be wildly abused just to get even moderately decent parity

I have been using VS Code as my full-time editor for a few months now and couldn't be happier. Originally I was only using it for TypeScript projects, where the language integration is top-notch, but eventually found myself using it al

The recent flurry of activity around async IO in Rust has been really exciting; to me, it indicates that the core team's decision to stabilize the language was a smart bet that is paying off in rapid ecosystem growth. One quibble I hav

One thing that I'm really excited to start working on is aligning the Ember object model towards the new features coming in ES2016+. During the period of JavaScript-the-language stagnation, we had no choice but to add these features as

You will find that Ember and Ember CLI are built on top of well-architected primitives; it's not that these things are hidden, it's just that understanding them isn't required to get started.

I think modernserf made some great points here, but didn't take the argument to its logical conclusion: just use a (non-bespoke) framework. We might not be able to provide novice users with One True Framework, but we need to do bet

If I wanted to downplay competitors, why would I acknowledge that Angular 2 is doing something similar? Angular has much larger marketshare at the moment than React. It is fundamentally different, as I outlined above. That's not down

The Inspector works by injecting some debug code into the running app, so it won't work with FastBoot because the JavaScript is running on the server. That said, it should work just fine once the Ember app finishes loading and running

With Fastboot, somehow an additional, non-interfering layer of computation on the server does the same loop (without having to download anything and without significantly slowing down overall client app JS initialization) Right. Typ

We've been beta testing Canvas on the Ember core team for a few months now and it has been awesome . Markdown is the lingua franca of open source, but until Canvas, none of the online collaboration tools we used understood it. Not onl

One of the authors of FastBoot here. I'm happy to answer any questions anyone has. (P.S. One thing I think that's pretty meta-cool about the FastBoot site is that it is, itself, a FastBoot site, running on Heroku.)

Sorry to nitpick, but I don't think the React example is an analogous initiative. ;) There is a huge gulf between "synchronously render a component in Node" and "asynchronously boot an app, marshall async data, render an

I'm really sorry it's felt like a slog for your team. We've learned a lot from the transition from 1.x -> 2.0, and definitely didn't get everything right. That said, we think we can refine the 2.x -> 3.0 transiti

Thanks, Sam. Like all things in technology, there are tradeoffs to make and a cost-benefit analysis that every project will do differently. We spend a lot of time on backwards compatibility in Ember, but my goodness, it's painful. Rece
