I understand that Nix solves many problems and indeed bet on its ability to do so. It is why I've put so much effort into Nix itself. However, Nix poses a relatively steep learning curve being built up from first principles making it v

That seems to be what the article is trying to avoid saying. I'm surprised there is no mention of Haskell; a place where much of this has been experimented and explored. It's fine to redesign the wheel, but take a look at older de

I'm a huge fan of the Nix shebang, and we now have a variant of it for the new CLI. Feedback on it would be appreciated.

Governance has been a difficult thing to make progress on. I can say that we did discuss recently cleaning up some of these old solutions and making official approaches clearly marked as such.

I work on Nix and think this paradigm has already impacted and will continue to influence software devopment in general. I want to make it easier for organizations/companies/groups to adopt it. Ideas and questions are welcome.

There is a naming problem here where "Nix" is often easily confused with the state management pieces (home-manager, NixOS, etc). The underlying Store abstraction provides the concepts of various kinds of addressing. This is indepe

Nix (and by extension Guix) has had remote builds and signed build provenance for nearly 2 decades. It has also had a story to deal with both content-addrrssed and input-addressed (this is our term for the "stable identifier" for

Look at how much room you have for data! I wonder what we can fit in there. More seriously, a metacircular example to draw from would be: https://github.com/kragen/stoneknifeforth

This was my first thought, but this connection was not made clear in the article - or if it was a naming coincidence.

Especially with the remote SSH features one needs a way to ensure everything needed for your process is on the target machine; Nix makes this easy. Nix + GDAL + GNUParallel + autoscaling groups === massive geospatial data processing pipelin

Generally what we see people do is: - build in CI - push to a cache (eg: S3-compatible/HTTPS/SSH) - use the cache elsewhere In that paradigm, the artifacts live in the binary cache (sometimes called substituter), much like contain

I never understood the concept of boarding from the front. I would never want to be the first on a plane; regardless of status. And this means that every single person passing them will bump, cough, shuffle, past those that boarded first. I

There are some efforts underway to address the people problems in the Nix community; empowering the various teams, spreading out knowledge among more people, making it easier to participate. In fact, this is a current topic of discussion; t

Stabilization of flakes and certain other experimental features is a top priority for the Nix team at the moment (disclaimer: myself included). Please take a look at RFC136 for an outline of our plan for the way ahead…… and please comment.

At flox, we are specifically focusing on those people who are the advocates and bringing Nix into their organizations, teams, and companies. We call them the “Ambassadors”, and want to call out how important that role is in making Nix mains

Translating from Nix to another packaging ecosystem usually entails removing specificity. This is why going in the opposite direction is harder. So I suspect we can provide escape hatches from Nix into Debian/RPM/Arch/Gentoo

I’ve loved my Framework so far and the excellent customer service. Is there still enough attention put into ensuring Linux compat? I’m especially interested in providing NixOS support as the Framework has been popular in that community.
