I use Teams for work. I also use zoom fairly frequently for calls with firms who use that instead. Honestly for video calls it's very much of a muchness, though I do wish Teams was a little bit less resource heavy (having said that &qu

This actually isn't that uncommon for airports. The first example which comes to mind is London City Airport which pays for local homes to have noise insulation fitted[0]. I believe doing this has been a condition of them being granted

The Heathrow Express used to have this at Paddington station, though I think it closed a while ago. A similar idea which is available in London though is Airportr - this is a company which will send someone to collect your bags from your ho

The "landmark" part of the 2012 court case was actually about how far claims could effectively be backdated, not the "equal value" part of the claims (which as I understand it was relatively straightforward because the c

If you like the series then this article[0] which was published in the LRB early in its run is well worth a read - it gives you a good idea of how the series came about and why it feels very closely observed. Reportedly many politicians at

Landlords are running a business and get taxed on the rental income of their property. Deducting costs, including interest, same as any other business, is pretty standard and most wouldn't say it's "unfair". Giving an in

The most valuable service banks provide is not just "matchmaking" lenders with borrowers (an exchange of some sort can do that much more cheaply) or even spreading credit risk across a pool of borrowers (again there are other ways

This type of structure creates risks around ability to pay which a well advised seller would try to avoid. You could design something which would mitigate that but it would likely end up costing more for the buyer to set up and run anyway.

The article briefly mentions atuin at the end. I've tried atuin but found it a little bit too heavyweight for me - instead I use zsh-histdb[0] (together with the fzf extension for it[1]) which allows you to easily answer this type of q

Where synthetic liquids (and indeed methane) can be interesting is if you want to ship the energy somewhere. So you can make the methanol somewhere with abundant cheap electricity and CO2, then ship or pipe it to places which lack that. It&

Yes. The other issue in terms of housing stock is that a lot of the more recent housing stock has nowhere to put a cylinder for hot water, which means it's not practical to use HPs for hot water for showers etc. This either means repla

Not sure. I experienced this personally using a picoPSU with spinning drives on one machine - no issues with spinup but silent data corruption on writes (which then got picked up by ZFS). Switching to a traditional PSU cured the problem.

You can do it with ZFS at least. I have a ZFS setup which idles drives. If I don't access the datasets on the drives, they don't spin up. You do have to be careful with things like auto snapshotting tools though - that will typica

Even if you have no issues with spinup, insufficient power can result in silent data corruption, which can be quite frustrating to diagnose (even if ZFS will help you see it). The difference between a picoPSU and a decent "real" P
