And it is. You can set all sorts of defaults. Facebook has just chosen the default default that tends to maximize engagement, THEN built a monetization platform on top of it.

That's because nobody who uses Twitter meaningfully follows 1150 people. Or at least it's not the norm.

Plus, nerds and design nerds both love 3D printing. That's a powerful combination.

The problem with nerds and their hobbies is so many of them (or better stated, us) have hobbies that will NEVER be used in the mainstream. So which ones will? Right now my guess is 3d printing is going to be massive in some way or another.

Wow this works really well! Love it. By the way, this really demonstrates why I don't have much confidence in speech based applications. I started playing this in my living room, and my sister immediately was like "why are you doing that?"

Really crappy feeling realizing that people got offended enough by how mediocre your blog was to flag and get it banned. My apologies HNers, I'll try to do better next time.

Sorry it got upvotes. I wanted to keep it short, but I thought it was interesting that we thought we should release the social version, didn't, were proven right by feedback BUT got valuable users because of some luck that shipping brought

Agreed. The fact that I could be a programmer clicked for me only because I made pretty complex TI-89 calculator programs and games in HS. I thought I was just dicking around, but later I was like "wait, this is programming? I've done this

Kids don't need to learn C or parsing XML. In fact nobody needs to learn to parse XML because either put that data in JSON or GTFO. But seriously, no it's not concepts like that that matter. That's syntax and strategy. It's "here's how to t

I've realized that I'm in a weird time in my life where I've been a few years out of college, am not an early adopter (more second wave adopter), and therefore no longer have an innate sense for what is about to take off. But I do not belie

Finding the bottom doesn't matter, that's impossible so don't even think about that. Just say "the market doesn't seem to be operating rationally today, I'll bet against it"

Oh I don't mean try to find the bottom! I mean try to find when something seems to be happening purely out of emotion, as in a stock going down for no discernible reason short of a weird investment environment I.E. FB and all its bad press

The absolute best way to buy stocks is to wait until something happens in the market that seems to be based on emotions and then bet the other way. 2 best examples I can remember where I noticed this was when Citi was at $1 despite the fac

The only, repeat the ONLY thing that matters, is cost to acquire a customer and the value of that customer to you in the term for which you can afford to measure. Daily Deals RARELY put you in the positive for that metric unless your conver
