Well, yeah. Of course lots of companies are targeting us for ads based on data that we lightheartedly assumed was private. It's even possible that they could do this without violating their ever-changing privacy policies. For example,

P.J. O'Rourke claimed that we tend to hire people who look like our nephews. It may be true. On the other hand, maybe not.

What nation is not in an on-again-off-again state of war throughout its existence? I think that may be the rule, not the exception.

Sooner or later, every online forum becomes focused primarily on driving users away. This doesn't make any sense (that I know of), but it seems to be a law of nature. SO might be immune. Then again, it might not.

Thanks for the info! I agree, my Korg Nano looks kind of cheap, and it gets twisted and it has trouble sitting flat. The nano works, but if I had to replace it I think I'd try the K-board.

The XKey is more like a piano-shaped Mac keyboard. The throw of the keys is ... a couple of millimeters?

Thanks, I'll take a look. The extra keys down to F are tempting.

Really looking for something close to a keyboard format, but those do look slick. Thanks.

This point of view is interesting. It's also inconsistent with the actual physics. (I'm calling the mainstream view of basic QM 'actual physics' because it has been checked obsessively against experiment for 100 years, n

For benefit of a friend new to HN (and anyone else who might be new here): Yes, the comments and the articles are almost separate, parallel discussions. The articles can be interesting in themselves, but for purposes of reading the comments

Yeah the article seems to get some simple percentages wrong early on. (The downvotes on the comment above are incomprehensible, but that's downvotes for you.)

I agree that's true once we know that the two envelopes have 100 and 200 dollars. For me the tricky part is, how do we know it's 100 and 200? Maybe we have two envelopes with 100 and 50 dollars instead.

The iPad will work alone, and if you're just starting out it's fine. But it's best to add a tiny MIDI keyboard to the iPad. For extreme compactness, the Korg Nanokey 2 works well for me. It has nontraditional "button&quo

It's a cool idea. I hope it's right. On the other hand, the Pleiades are tricky to count. There are a lot more than just 6 or 7 stars in the constellation. Wikipedia claims that 14 can be seen with the naked eye (whatever that mea

Take an atom that somehow only has two energy levels, 0 and 1. Connect the atom to a heat sink at temperature T. At very low T that atom almost always has energy 0. We know the energy of each atom very well, they're (almost) all 0. P

I'd expect them not to call ordinary long-accepted facts "myths" without some kind of coherent explanation. That isn't simplification.
