I would like to see some of the faceted garnets found. The ones in the pictures all look natural to me.

What do you give up when you stick to rational numbers apposed to real numbers when dealing with nature? I could see some things like pi would point to real numbers but in nature we will never get "exact" measurements anyway. Are

Could, is there talk about, nature being rational and not real (as in the number systems). Things could still being infinitely small but still discreet. As an armchair physicist I think this is a brilliant idea.

I used to be a fan but now I think his world view is much more "Whatever suits me for the moment." There maybe times when that matches up with whatever others might believe or want but it is not to be relied upon.

I have been wanting a Morse Code keyboard for years (I was a wearable computer hopeful around the turn of the century [1][2]). I've built a couple morse code keyboards in the past. One with a scavenged ps2 keyboard, a giant messy hack.

I suppose they did the same sorts of things pianists did before pianos. Edit: and built radios.

How many Hacker News readers can understand what is said and being asked here? I would like to know but my math knowledge is not nearly up to it. Do even more (much more) experienced mathematicians have to study it for a while or does it mo

I have seen the add and did not think anything of it. It is not much different or any more mindless than a lot (maybe most) other adds these days.

I am glad to see Ted Chiang listed as well as Martha Wells with the murderbot "All Systems Red". I would like to add Diaspora: A Novel by Greg Egan. The bit about Wang's carpets (sort of Wang's Tiles) was my favorite bit

I 55yo. I think any people 40s+ would have meet 90-100 yo family members in their youth. I lived in in a 1870s house in a town in Connecticut and most of the houses on Main St. were of that vintage. It is not so uncommon in New England. Of

"132 years old seems older to an American than it does to you" As an American, I take some small exception here. I have met people who were alive when this letter was written. 132 years was a long time ago, but not that long.

I have been working on PE problems for most of 10 years. One thing I would sort of like to do is make a library (mostly I have been using python) for some of the more common functions. Do you have anything like that?

Has here been any work done to find out about the average HN user? It seems like it would be a hard thing to do but it might be interesting to see. I do not even know what sort of metrics would be useful to measure.
