Hmm, what's so amazing about it? It's a voxel graphic engine, of course it's going to have great detail and no polygons (duh). That's not new. Commanche had this in 1992... I'm not at all an expert in this area, can someone who is explain w

As I read it, the alternative implementation should branch of at a single point in the code. The alternative path usually requires modifications in the functions and data it's calling and using. But instead of going through the code adding

I don't know a single app(?) whose names he mentioned in this article. I simply can not connect these new product/startup names with what they're supposed to be doing for me. Curious if anyone else has this experience.

Couldn't read the article as the server is overloaded. But I have some thoughts about the headline. This may contain some hyperbole, you have been warned. I don't understand Berlins appeal. It has one fatal flaw: no industry. In my opinion

The fact that Apple built general purpose computers does not make the head of the company the most important figure of gaming.

Eh? I run OpenBSD as a "desktop" and I use 3D acceleration to play 3D games and all that stuff. Even playing videos these days requires DRI support in the kernel. With a bit of careful hardware selection, 3D acceleration works out of the bo

Ahh, sometimes I wish computers still had real front panels. How nice it would be to quickly manipulate physical memory and registers when a machine crashed.

Ridiculing serves as an information overload protection, it shuts the inventor up and prevents ones brain to explore the idea in more depth. One has to respect that people don't want to be bombarded with information. They have a life, too.

Yes, I'm sure the ancient UNIX haters handbook is totally relevant to the shortcomings of X11 at the end of 2011. Edit: deleted comment refered to this http://www.art.net/~hopkins/Don/unix-haters/x-windows/disast...

Yes I did. My reply was to someone who assumed "no license" would grant him "all rights" (public domain) when in fact it does not give him any rights. For the copyright owner, the reverse is obviously true. You and the other downv^Wredditor

No license/no copyright declaration means no rights in all countries that have signed the Berne Convention ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berne_convention ). This includes the USA since 1989.

It is possible that Linux does not reinitialize the wireless chipset in the right way, leading to a performance loss after hibernation. Quite a common bug in that area. The level of detail in this bug report is a little low...

It looks like this way of organising the source (src) tree started in 4.1BSD (1982?). Before that, all the commands lived under /usr/src/cmd/. See http://minnie.tuhs.org/cgi-bin/utree.pl?file=4.1cBSD/usr/src and http://minnie.tuhs.org/cg

Relax, there is no reason to get so worked up about a little trolling. Someone who just two hours ago told us that his favourite tools are emacs and a terminal emulator certainly doesn't have any weight in the anachronistic tool debate. Mos

But... computer scientists don't write code! That's not what they're studying, it's not their job! Writing code is what women do. "Computer Science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes."

A nullpointer exception in java is the exact same notification that C gets. A segmentation fault has nothing to do with C, it's an exception raised by the CPU. Printing a stack trace also has zero to do with C, but I would bet that the code

IBM talks about up to 100 layers, not 1000. Not all components have the same power requirements or are even powered up at the same time. Also this is IBM research. They don't need to make robust processors for the consumer market. If the CP
