Nix is a build system + dependency manager. So wouldn't that cover the use case? I know some packages use a Makefile with ocamlbuild or the like. I want less moving parts and less things to learn if I can.

Hopefully the OP already migrated repositories elsewhere and only allows Microsoft GitHub to open merge requests to projects that have yet to institute a mirror or mailing list.

In 2023, you shouldn’t be using nix-env or niv or shell.nix but rather just use Nix Flakes. It’s listed in the notes but this has long been where everyone has moved for a couple of years now (why it’s still “experimental” is a different que

The irony is that I have some regrets pushing to move my family to Signal (mostly away from Facebook Messenger and SMS) while I've pondered a dumbphone or a Linux phone due to SIM card+Android/iOS primary device required. On this

Jitsi works for screensharing on X11 + Fx for me. It's a worthy alternative if you want to escape not unjust Microsoft but Google as well.

Yup. A Fx Nightly user might be reporting a new, valid bug about a spec change or new policy around the anti-fingerprinting tech which would give the site/app owner time to react before this change makes its way to stable. Will there b

"Vast" has subjectivity to it, and neither of us will bother doing this per capita, but China, as well as the US, Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines have massive populations and it's not the most popular in them. I suppose i

I self-hosted ejabberd on an 2014 smartphone using postmarketOS last weekend. The defaults were almost all good enough and the only tricky part was setting up all the networking bits (getting my domain names hooked up to nameservers, dynami

I can agree any Apple-specific lock-in is not good, however you're talking about the ability to chat on the platform and not going beyond just access to include whether we should be trusting our data to that platform—different question

Moving to WhatsApp is hardly an upgrade. Having to trust the encryption out of Meta and be required to share your address book/contacts and metadata with them is not the future we should want for the next generation. It's not a &q

With rose-tinted glasses, we can and probably should go back to this. I fondly remember YIM from high school and eventually getting Pidgin/Adium to wrangle ICQ, MSN, AIM, and the mass of options Jabber-based options via libpurple. I&#x
